I was curious to know how many on the board DO NOT annually vaccinate, (other than
rabies)?
I have 2 GSD's and only completed their puppy shots and rabies.
I do this as a personal choice due to the belief that a healthy dog has more than enough immunity to fight off viruses.JMO
However, I'm quite frustrated with my vet because she insists on these things.I simply walk away with a grin. Has anyone met or seen a vet that believes that annual vaccinations ARE NOT "written in stone"?
I don't vaccinate annually. I separate my puppy shots..don't give the combination DHLPP. I give 1/2 cc rabies vaccine at about 8 months... From that point on I do titers on my dogs.. they have never come back low... I have 2 10 year old dogs that haven't been vaccinated in almost 5 years.. all titers are normal. I am lucky to have a vet that does believe in raw diets and limited vaccine.
I have given my own vaccinations, aside from rabies, for years. The past several years I've skipped on my adult dogs, as well as with my horses. I don't understand why in humans the toddlers get a series and are done, aside from certain instances. Yet animals are expected to have annual boosters. Didn't make sense to me, thus my decision not to do annual boosters.
I think over vaccination is "THE MOST SERIOUS" health problems that face our dogs today. We don't vaccinate our kids every year, we certainly should not be injecting viruses into our dogs every year.
If you want to learn more about this subject read the book I sell titled What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccinattion http://www.leerburg.com/945.htm
Jody;
Have you ever had a problem finding a vet that will do the Titers?
Maybe it's just where I live, but when I was looking into this test, Tufts University was the only one that would perform it, and they quoted me a price that was outragious!!
You can have the blood drawn and send it out to Dr. Jean Dodds in california.. I am not sure of the cost.. but you would only have to do the rabies every 3 years.. and the DHLPP isn't a law. Dr. Dodd's phone is 310-878-4804.
I have been reading about the dangers of over vaccinating and I have decided to no longer revaccinate my dogs. My 10 year old male GSD has an immune problem that I blame at least partially on vaccinations. The only one I will continue is the rabies, except not on the old guy. I am lucky that I have a vet that goes along with me on not revaccinating the old one and he also is very comfortable with doing titers. I have not yet discussed with him the fact that I will probably not even bother with the titers.
You are all lucky that you do not live in England. You can not get your dog into a privte boarding kennel over here without a current vaccination certificate.
Also, with the help of Ed and his friend Bob Neijts in Holland. I am importing a female Malinois into the UK. She will be on of only 4 working Mal bitches in the UK. Listen to this.
I had to have the dog microchipped (even thoug she is tattoed, then rabies vaccinated, then one month later she had a blood test which was sent to a government approved lab. She passed the test and then has to wait 6 months from the date of the rabies shot before she can come to the UK. But 48 hours befor she comes to the UK she have to be treated for ticks and tapeworm and then she can only come into a port 400 miles from where I live.
Then, so she can travel in and out of the country for training or mating I have to keep up to all her vaccinations on a yearly basis. If I miss one vital shot by the one year anniversary, she has to start all over again.
I wish my fore fathers had moved to the land of the free
Could anyone tell me anything about this heartworm stuff? Is It a good idea to have the dog tested every year even if he is on the heartguard pills? Or are the Heartworm pills another hoax? Thank You!!
