you basically sum up my opinion of pits to a tee. my mother in law is deathly afraid of pits (and even dogs she thinks look like pits) , and is convinced that at a certain age they can "turn".. yet she openly professes how much she loves wolf hybrids!
i'd take a quality bred pit over a hybrid any day. unfortunately though, i know my skills as a trainer aren't up to par, and with the possible legal ramifications, i don't think i'll be owning a pit in the next decade.
i just hope the breed isn't stamped out when i feel ready.
Not only is it sad that Ed can find this many articles from Feb, but most of this on young children. I dont believe we need breed banning, but I think if the media would report on the Golden Retrievers, Pomeranian's, and other dogs that have hurt people, maybe folks would wake up. These stories are horrible. I say a little prayer every time I hear about these poor little children that have become a victim of this. Quit having to license dogs through the city....License the people. There has to be an answer.
I wonder why you dont hear of the attacks in Beverly Hills, or the Hamptons? Just a thought.

How would they decide who gets a license and who doesn't? What kind of "test" would one have to pass? What sort of standard would need to be met? Would anyone REALLY want to leave that kind of decision up to the government? Eventually all we'd be able to own is those battery-operated electronic dogs kids play with.
Not arguing with you, Danielle...just thinking out loud
I suggested the same thing awhile back, I suggested something akin to the the Bh or AKC good citizen but I was scolded by some of the members and told that type of requirements would be counter productive to thier training/work requirements. no easy answers here
are pitt bulls not illegal to keep in the us then? rict here in the uk. you get caught in public with a pit bull and they take it off you there and then and take it to the vets and destroy it. they not allowed here at all. even mixs. i dont suppose you heard about a young girl getting mauled to death by a pit bull on new years day in the uk??? the police went hunting for pitt bulls after that and destroyed loads of them

personal property rights, specificaly spelled out in our Constitution as well as Ex Post Facto section of it. That and the fact if they go after a certain breed whats say next year its not the GSD or Rottie or maybe one of your Collies that gets a little snippy
sorry i dont understand that. look it up on the uk internet if you think im wrong, i watch a fifteen year old boy in manchester get beaten to the floor because he had a pit bull with him by the police, lukily the boys friend ran off with the dog but the police kicked the dog twice in the face so it would retaliate and try and bite. two patrol cars were out then cruizing for the dog, dunno if they find it, but its because its an illegal fighting dog here.
Oh I beleive you, don't doubt that happening in the UK one bit. In the US its much harder to get bans and prohibitions inacted. You won't see a National or federal law of that type. It would be local and state governments enacting ordinance
