What's so bad about letting strangers pet my dog?

Aside from the bad possibility of my dog/pup biting a stranger while being pet, what really is Ed's reason for not allowing one's dog to be open to strangers? Does it have any negative effects on the dog's overall temperament? Or is it just in keeping with the dog's pack instinct of "no outsiders, outsiders get killed".

I can only speak for myself, but I'm going to jump in. I have found most of the working breeds really don't want to be pet by strangers in the way other breeds do. It's not about "killing outsiders", they just are more discriminating I guess. It's not neccessary for strangers to pet my dog. I don't like it and my dog doesn't like it. So there!!!

Its what you want the dog to do that determines petting or not. If you want sloppy happy dog park house pet go ahead have fun. I want my dogs to focus on me when I'm "working" them, not nose bumping people for pets and treats. As Ed pointed out in his DVD once you shown the puppy that other people are nothing to be concerned with and you are the most interesting thing in his world you really get some solid training in. My Shiba is not a working dog and because I'm a teacher she must be 100% safe and used to children.
Initially I did not allow anyone to pet her because I agreed with Ed's opinion on this, but it was really difficult when my students saw her (I live close to my school), so now I allow it.
If anyone whistles to her or calls here name, I will tell her 'No', and keep the leash tight.
But, if someone comes up to me and wants to pet her I will tell her to 'sit stay', and then let the person get their warm fuzzies.

Susan you're so funny,
I always attract crowds with Bandit when I take the girls to the park, I guess they see I have two young girls and think they can all bring their children as if for one moment they stepped into a petting zoo, I'll have 5 kids surrounding Bandit to pet him and their parents bringing more kids over, I can't understand it at times...I almost want to put a muzzle on him just to see if they would still come over w/their kids, you know?
Sometimes I just want to read a good book while the girls are playing on the slides and not play ZOOKEEPER!!

Everybody here has a point. I've come to realize that it's really about the goals you have for you and you dog. Having a working breed (assuming the owner intends to train and keep it as such) naturally gravitates towards no petting by strangers I guess. Has anybody had any experience where your working breed's focus was affected by too much schmooze?

You know I let members of the club pet my dogs if we are standing chatting but they don't kneel down and give my dogs huggs and kisses.A nice pet on the head or back is all needed.i think it all depends what the petting is going to be ,i think for me that is why I don't like strangers pet my dogs when I am out in public places, because you always have someone stupid that will get down to my dogs face and try to kiss him or hug him.But someone I am talking to simply petting him lightly will not distract my dog once I move my dogs move with me and pay attention. For me having tons of kids around my dog is fine he won't care but I do,we have enough children for him to play with at home, I don't need any extra, plus it's my time with my dog/s.
I'm just glad they are not fear biters because they always attract someone that wants to pet them, I guess it's a good thing..

I do not like adults petting my dog except for club members also, mainly because I feel an adult will look down on my female and she will take that as a chalenge. She does not react to children because I think she feels they are "puppies" also, but an adult bending over her is a disaster waiting to happen. The couple of adult staingers I allowed to pet her I saw her reaction so now I never let anyone pet her she does not know, and thats not many people, and no child is allowed near her without me holding her leash. For the most part noone WANTS to come near my lil sweety since she is a very alert dog to begin with.

Now, just how many of you have that kind of diagnosis on the file folder cover of your pet at the Vet's? I presume the notes are an attempt to give a tech a heads-up on a dog but it seems a dangerous notation to me.
Usually the only notation on a file is a "caution" "fear biter" "needs a muzzle" warning, etc., etc. I agree it is extremely risky to put an invitation to touch right on the file.
I always ask if a dog is friendly. I always ask permission to pet or treat a dog. And I always use a degree of caution with any dog even when the owner says it's OK to touch or treat.
Puppies are a whole different story.
