I was just wondering what your opinions are on the Lyme vaccine?
Busters vet recommended it. I turned it down. I have heard some of the horror stories it has caused for humans so I really didn't want to subject him to that. Any opinions? Pam
I definitely wouldn't do it. My own vet (not the holistic one either!) told me that I would be better off not having my dogs vaccinated for Lyme. She said that it can cause more harm than good, and really wasn't worth the risk. Of course my holistic vets said the same thing, so they were all of the same opinion on the matter.
Now I have to put in here that this is MY OPINION (and the vets') or everyone will jump down my throat. Todd?? Where are you? Don't disappoint me...I know you're just ready and waiting for another chance...
My dogs have been vaccinated for lime disease for several years now. My vet very much insisted on it because we live in a high risk area. what are the bad things about the vaccination? I also understand there are other tick diseases that are as bad as lime but there are no vaccinations for them
What exactly are the complications from the vaccine? I get my dogs vaccinated every year because I live in a high risk area. But if there is a risk to my dog's health then I would definately drop it. Any websites on this?
I've been told by a Vet that when the vaccine was first developed, there was a lot of cases of the dogs getting very sick from the shot, symptoms of the disease itself. He went on to say that now they have made improvements to the vaccine and that researchers feel that the problem may not have been the vaccine all along....it was the dogs themselves already having Lyme disease(unknown to their owner) when they were brought in for the shot. Not my explanation, just what I was told. I personaly don't vaccinate for Lyme and I would be very skeptical of it if I were anyone else.
I beleive there are actually some lawsuits pending regarding the lyme vaccine for animals as well. Unfortunately, the symptoms it has caused are much more significant and devastating than the lyme disease itself (for those dogs that have reacted to it).
As well, my vet said that the vaccine was based on ticks found in the eastern states...not western, so it would give no protection against the disease found out west.
In my opinion one would be better off taking precations as far as ticks getting on and digging into your dogs. There are several holistic 'repellents' out that are suppose to be useful against ticks. Many will also spray thier dog with an oil and water base spray so that their fur/skin is oily and difficult for ticks to stay on the dog. Course, one can always check your dog carefully after any 'romp' or treck into deep woods or long grass. I beleive I also read that the tick would need to be on the body for a substantial amount of time in order to do any damage IF it contained the propenents of lyme disease.
From what I've heard, the Lyme vaccine is supposed to be one of the worst. As Shandar said, some dogs will develop severe symptoms of Lyme Disease from it. I know that there are cases of people developing severe arthritis from the vaccine also. Skip the vaccine, and if the dog develops it later, treat for that instead. In the meantime, you should definitely get your dog on a good tick preventative, as previously mentioned.

I find it interesting that they no longer make the vaccine for humans, but still do for dogs!!
I live in a very high Lyme area and I DO NOT use the vaccine.I choose to use Bio- spot instead. If I didn't have kids I would use Preventic collar.
Keep in mind that the deer tick which carries Lyme is so tiny the chances of finding one on a dog are slim to none, especially since it is the nymph that you have to worry about and it is the size of a pencil point!
I feel better using a repellant/killer administered topically.
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
As far as the Lyme vaccine for humans I have heard about the severe arthritis, (as mentiond) severe neurological problems, among the usual symptoms of weakness, lethargy etc. I have also heard about the lawsuits for the human vaccine; that is why I was wondering about the animal vaccine as well. Thanks everyone, Pam
