"MYTH BUSTERS" is going debunk myths about dogs, should be interesting, the teaser showed them trying to bribe a protection dog with a steak and teaching old dogs new tricks
FYI the owner of the training field where that was taped think that people will start calling them to get protection dogs, which they do not sell.
The area police depts train there in addition to the schutzhund folks (and my obedience!)
From the people that were there for the taping, the steak only worked for a bit.
I think it will be entertaining as long as you don't take it very seriously, even tho they did make some interesting discoveries. such as high velocity bullets will only penetrate a few inches of water and will fragment into tiny pieces, Birds will set off speed trap cameras, the legend of the passenger car powered by rockets was debunked etc. usualy something is destroyed or blown up by the end of the show
I saw the show this evening and I was shock. One of the myths was you could distract a trained guard dog long enough with various items to steal whatever. They tried body language, didn't work, They used a beef steak to distract the dog and that work with this dog as well as wolf urine and bitch in heat urine they totaly got past the dog. I missed the company/kennel that supplied the dog but I must say with my limited experience I taught two of my dogs not to take food from strangers. The dog backed off the decoy with a shirt with the wolf urine and paid no attention to the decoy when destracted with oder of bitch or a steak shoved in front of him, I'm almost positive K9 protection people train to that or am I wrong?
Now that the criminal world knows to try those things, PPD trainers should start training those scenarios.
What if the PPD is also a stud dog... still train with the odor of a bitch in heat as distraction? I vaguely recall Flinks using a bitch in heat as distraction (for OB work) - there was a breeding planned anyway so the dog's reward was to breed the bitch. Anybody recall this?
