I am so confused as what to do about annual vaccines due next month for both of my dogs
Blue my GSD is 4 years & 5 months old
Sadie my Great Dane/Newfoundland Cross is 6 years old (getting old for her mix)
They have had all their jabs since they were pups and here in the U.K. we do not vaccinate against rabies or heart worm.
Sadie used to go to boarding kennels when we are on holiday and they won't accept dogs that aren't vaccinated but the last time she went in she didn't do very well and was apparently not eating and very stressed. So I've decided that unless I can take both my dogs on hols I shall stay home.
I just don't know what to do - I keep reading articles but can't reach a decision.
As if everyone on the board doesn't already know what I personally do
Gwen, I vaccinate my dogs only for Rabies because it is required by law here. Rabies and puppy parvo is the extent of vaccinations for mine anymore. I personally have a dog who has had serious problems due to his vaccinations (he had them all when he was a puppy), so I not about to make the same mistake again.
It's different for those who need to board their dogs. Most boarding facilities require proof of all vaccinations, but luckily I haven't needed to board mine, so I haven't had to deal with this yet.
I recently decided to run titers on one of mine who hadn't had any boosters of any kind in 3 yrs. They all came back well above, some waaayyy above the limit for needing new boosters, so he's good to go for awhile.
O.K. I may be really thick here but what are titers. I have seen this word mentioned on the board before but don't know what it means.
Gwen
Its a blood test to determine if earlier vac is still effective. I don't know how many states here accept them. You might discuss this with your vet.
I will certainly discuss this with my vet before I decide what to do. I've not heard of this in the U.K. but then I learn something new all the time on this board
Something interesting -in the year 2000 both dogs had DHPPiL jabs - last year they had PPi only as I recall the vet saying they didn't need both Does that make sense to you?
I want to do the best I can for my dogs but sometimes I just don't know what is best!!!!
Over here, rabies shots are sometimes given at 1yr intervals, some vets do 3yrs. I think it sometimes comes down to how far behind they are in their car payments.
This is my thoughts on Titters:
I discussed this with our vet. He said he didn't have much experience with the test. He wanted to reasearch it before making a comment. The info he came back with was two schools of thought.
One gave it a go ahead and the other had reservations on the procedure.(something to do with the memory of the cells being tested)
He agreed to to what I wanted, I opted for the shots. They are due this month. I will give the rabies only, then one week later give other shots.
My two dgs are Boarded quite often, this was my deciding factor.
I guess it's something each owner has to decide for themselves. Due your own reasearch and make the decission on what you think is best for your K-9 and yourself.
