Was wondering how often you raw feeders see a little blood in your dogs poop. I figure with all the good stuff we feed our dogs, it's bound to happen from time to time.
This morning my pup went outside. He had a poop accident shortly after (guess you can't leave them alone even if they just went outside 3 mins ago), and there was a little blood in it. About half an hour later, I took him outside thinking he would just pee, but as soon as we got there, he squatted for what seemed an eternity! (easily 10 mins). First thing that came out of his anus was a little piece of bone, probably a chicken wing bone. It was about half an inch long. It came out alright, but it got me thinking 'what if the bone came sideways? That would be very painful.... and dangerous!?'.
Well he stayed there for 8 more minutes and only liquid was coming out. At first I saw a little blood, but then it was mainly yellowish liquid. I'm not sure he's constipated since he had already gone three times before releasing the bone.
Do your dogs release bones like this? Without any stool, just the bone coming out?

I've fed only raw for approximately 9 months I guess, maybe longer and I haven't had this occur.
Is he ok? Other than stating the obvious that if he were my pup, I'd watch him, I'm also the paranoid type and would call my vet and see what they say.
The raw feeders who have a long term experience I'm sure can help you steer you better than me.
Hope the little guy is just fine.

I have never had just bones in any of my dogs stool, but I am sure it is bound to happen.
I would watch it today, or if you are a worry wart like I am (but I am getting better) go see the vet now, and keep an eye on your dog for any changes in attitude or energy, hard tender abdomen, lethargy, any signs of pain...ect.
Go to the vet if ANY of these things are occurring. He may have just been constipated and ruptured a blood vessel (happens to humans also) BUT if the bone was sharp at all, it could have tore or punctured the bowel.
How much blood was there? Bright red or brownish like it was starting to congeal?

Problem with the vet visit is that after going through all the yellow pages and asking the vets about their thoughts on raw feeding, NONE had anything positive to say about it. ALL were against it.
So I know exactly what's going to happen when I take him, and want to avoid this unless I have to.
He seemed fine except for the fact that he squatted for an unusual amount of time, which made me think that he wanted to release something and wasn't able to.
I had to go to class right after I took him outside, and he's in his crate right now. Will get home in about 25 mins.
He seemed fine before I left. Was chewing some toys and had energy.
I do worry, but put yourself in my shoes.
"Hi, I want you to check my puppy because I feed him raw even though everybody tells me not to, and because today there was blood in his poop and later a bone came out of his ass".

Hmmm, this has happened twice this morning??? Was there more or less in the other stool?
I cannot tell from the photo, but it does look like something I would definitely watch and if it happens again, I personally would go to the vet....
On a lighter note, it is GREAT that we share photos like this. Not very many boards out there where we download dog poop for others to look at and give opinions on.

Nope, don't want to put myself in your shoes. My vet doesn't agree w/raw feeding either. Would absolutely love the opp to say to me, "See, I told you"!
Richard, I surely don't mean to minimize your concern but your quote was just way too funny !

Yeah, camera apparently has trouble focusing on small stuff.
Yes, it's great that we can share photos this way. This is my third poop pic, and I also posted a pic of my dogs vomit.
He went this morning around 6AM and pooped. No blood. Then he had an accident about 10 minutes after that, and that was the pic you saw. Then about 2 hours later, he pooped the bone (didn't have a camera then, but will take a pic when I get home) and remained squatting for 10 more minutes. At first a little blood came out, then just yellowish juice.
Damn, now I'm worried. What happens if it's the bowel thing?

Edit reason: leaving class now. Will take him outside as soon as I get there and will log here after that

I did not mean to worry you, if there was less in the third poop and he had runny stool that was free of blood after that, then just keep an eye on it and the dog.
If he is acting normal and there are no signs of pain now, then all probability points to something that is taking care of itself.
I can be a worry wart with my dogs, just because they are all so HIGH drive that there symptoms come out later than they would with a lower activity dog. So if drive and attitude changes, I know they are off somewhere. Then I do the whole, take the temp, heart rate, cap refill, respiration checks and the once over for cuts, tenderness, ticks, yada yada, and if that is normal then I fast for that meal time and offer water and crate rest.
If that does not help, then I call the vet. 98% of the time they come out of it by themselves.
You could call your vet and ask and see what they say. That is always an option and I apologize for not mentioning it in my first post.

I'm with Carol.
I just looked back and realized that this is a puppy, right?
I'd probably start calling those vets in the area again, I think, rephrasing my criteria to find a vet who will work with you and not try to scare you away from your chosen diet (since active support seems to be unavailable ). This is the kind of situation I just don't want to face: being afraid to call my vet because of my feeding decisions.
Meanwhile, I'd be watching those poops carefully. One more water-poop and I'd call the vet.
And if there's no more, after a couple days of normal poop, I think I would collect a sample and drop it off just to make sure they found no continuing bleeding. I'd also consider a probiotic; it sounds like maybe the dog's enzymes (that process bones) aren't up to speed yet.
I don't want to scare you, either, because of all the poop problems I've had checked, raw feeding has never been the culprit. But there is something going on, sounds like.
I hope breeders and other puppy-savvy people will comment, because I'm neither.
