I know my puppy would drink all day if I let her, but I only give her water with her meals. How much water is sufficient for a 15-lb 13-week golden retriever?

Do you mean she would play in it all day? She should have access to drinking water all day. If she makes a mess in it, you can get a giant rabbit water bottle which she would have to lick to get the water out, but really she needs water more than just when she eats. If you are only giving it to her when she eats, she's probably so thirsty she drinks a ton all at once, and if she is eating kibble, I think there is possibly an issue with bloating!

I'm with Sue, for dogs of all ages. I understand that some pups have to have it taken up in the evening so they can make it through the night better, but otherwise dogs need water all day. If they get kibble, which contains no water (unlike fresh food), then they need even more throughout the day.
And that's a major point about bloat. Also, lots of dogs do not drink what they need at mealtimes; they drink after play and after chew-toys.

Dogs vary widely in how much water they use. With a healthy dog, I think we have to let the dog decide.

If for some reason you cannot give free access to water, the dog should have free access to water for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening. Straight from the Animal Welfare Act.

Whatcha feed?
A friend watched my raw fed guy for a couple days, and he was shocked at how little he drank (compared to his kibble fed dog).

Hey Victoria:
I scheduled water from ages (7) weeks through (12) weeks. During this scheduled period, I always put water down before each meal, which was (3) times per day, as well as during each meal. At the end of the meal I picked up both food and water. I would also offer water once between each meal. So water was offered at least (5) times per day.
I stopped scheduling water due to the bout with diahreah, as I was very concerned about dehydration. However during week (12) I started putting down bowls of ice cubes instead of whater so he had to chew. As he likes to eat snow and ice, I figured I was covering lots of bases with that one.
I transitioned to ice cubes and water during week (13). Now he has free access to water whenever he is not crated during the day.
Side Note: I also freeze chicken broth and that is a tasty treat that he just loves.

I don't free water indoor dogs- too hard to potty train and there's really no need to. Just offer the dog water many times throughout the day(about every hour or two and, of course, after playtime & during meals.)
That way I can supervise the dog's intake and predict potty times.
If at work, a rabbit water bottle does the job.
At home, I take the pup out to drink from his crate.
Plus, aren't we supposed to be supervising our pupppies at all tmes anyway?
I guess to me, "free access" means unsupervised, bowl full of water for the dog to help himself to while he's out doing his own thing.
For dogs outdoors, I use the automatic valve that hooks on the faucet or a big bowl for free access, since they can do their duty freely & the heat.

Per my Training the Canine Athlete book, dogs need a minimum of 2 ounces of water per pound of body weight. That is a minimum so you need to make sure you take in, exercise, weather ect.....

My dogs get water whenever they want , especially here when it gets to be over 100 degrees. They can go outside and in and have water outside for them and inside.Taking water away IMO is not good for any amount of time.

I agree with Angelique, water at all times. If a dog is thirsty, he needs to drink. You don't want a dehydrated dog. Let the dog decide when he needs water. If he has free access to clean fresh water all day, he won't be dying of thirst and drink a whole bowl when it's finally given to him.
Victoria, since your puppy is 13 weeks you can take up the water around 6PM or 7PM to help him with potty training during the night (he'll still have to go out at night for potty breaks), but he should have water all day if he needs it, especially there in Florida.
