He eats in this crate, and has one of those plastic airline crates to sleep in. He just doesn't get that he can't pee in his crate (he won't poop inside, though). I took him outside, didn't go, put him in his crate for 3 minutes and he went inside. There was no towel at the moment, so I had to bathe him. Getting a little annoyed about having accidents everyday.
I don't mind him eating on the kitchen floor on top of some newspapers. And I planned on switching crates once he was a little bigger. But I just can't see him going because of all the plastic, and thought that this wire crate would make things easier. I'm afraid he'll start pooping in the wire crate if it's too big and then I would be really upset.

The wire crate is twice as big as it should be for crate and housetraining. It probably will be the right size for your pup when it is fully grown (assuming that is a normal beagle pup).
Cute puppy!

Thx.
It's just not possible for me to see him going inside the other crate and stop him. I figured it was too big, just that he doesn't mind peeing in a small one. I suck at this!

Richard,
Your being too hard on yourself. You've only had the little guy a few weeks. He can probably sense your frustration too and that may add to his accidents. Stick with the smaller crate for now.
Just keep consistently taking him out and prasing like mad when he goes outside. Minimize the chances he has to go in the crate by taking him outside as soon as you see him waking up in there. Also, try not to put him in his crate unless he has just come in from outside. Beagles can take longer than other dogs as already has been discussed but soon enough it will be habit for him to go outside and nowhere else.
I know we did a heck of a lot of laundry the first few weeks with out Beagle pup, but the last few months she is doing wonderful in that department.

When I got one for my dog, it came with an extra wire piece to use to partition it into a smaller area. Anyway you can do that here with some kind of material? Looks to me like this size would be o.k. when he's grown, and I think he'd be just as content now in a smaller space and the "crate-breaking" would be easier.

I agree with Mike and the above poster. The crate is good sized for when ur pup grows up, but its too big for crate training purposes. Your pup need enough room to lay day, stand up, and walk in a circle. Anything more, and accidents will happen more frequently. Try to get him outside as much as possible and dont leave him in the create for too long without givin the chance to releive himself. Hope this helps. Good luck w everything.

Richard, everyone's suggestions are right on. Don't be so hard on yourself. Really. I got my first dog, who is now 1 yr and I thought crate training was brutal, but I made sure she went outside every 45 mins or if I saw her sniffing around or in circles. Sometimes she pooped, most times she didn't. I also would get up & take her outside a few times during the night to make sure she didn't go in her crate. I also started bell training and was so happy the 1st day she rang that bell to go outside. It just takes time, so don't give up. If you can, put a partition and make the wire kennel smaller though, it really is too big for crate training right now.

Richard, I agree the wire crate can be used, just make it smaller inside for the cutest puppy in the world (I can't get over how precious she is). You can use a cardboard box inside the crate as a barrier, unless you have a pup like mine was and loves to eat everything made of wood. Whatever material you can think of to close off part of the crate inside for her.
You may already be doing this, but as a reminder when you take her out to potty, make sure she walks around a bit on leash while outside until she potties, before you bring her in. It helps them.

Thanks guys. I kinda knew the crate was too big, I was just looking for a bit of support
She's a he, Sandy!
Sometimes I'm sure he gets it, like yesterday after I posted this thread, he was in his crate (had been like 1.5 hours since he last peed) and started barking. He never barks in his crate, so I took him outside and he did both things! I was very happy. Yesterday he went accident free for the first time since... I don't even remember.
So it seems to be a peeing issue. It would be easier if I lived in a house with a back yard, for sure. I'll just keep working hard. Thanks again all.

Oops, sorry Richard, I meant "he" (I knew that! )
It sounds like he's beginning to get the potty training! If I remember correctly, you have to take an elevator to get outside? If so, I can't imagine a bigger challenge in the housetraining area. So a big hooray for you both!
