I am a Police K9 handler and have been since 1992. I am currently working my 3rd dog. I am far from any type of expert on blood lines, however a recent discussion among myself and some other handlers the subject came up. One of the handlers mentioned seeing ads for working line puppies in which the breeder made mention that the dog's line were free of Mink. I am assuming they meant Mink V Haus Whitfield. In my years in K9 I have seen off spring and dogs with Mink in them and they were very tough and, quite frankly, good Police Service Dogs. My question is why would breeders want to stay away from Mink lines ? If my afformentioned assumption on the dog the add's were refereing to is Mink V. Haus Whitfield....?? Thanks
If you don't know what you're breeding then Mink will produce badly resulting in nervey dogs. If you know what lines to cross (and I don't so don't ask ) you can get good results from Mink lines.
As Mike said, Mink has produced some nervy dogs - of course, that can be said of just about any dog with sufficient drive. And Mink breedings had a reputation for producing some dogs with handler aggression issues also ( although I've never seen that personally )
I've liked most of what I've seen out of the Mink lines, enough to own one myself. And I tend to own dogs that would make good Police Service canines ( again, my personal preference )
Often breeders who advertise they are 'free' of certain lines are letting the public know of options out there for breeding purposes. Mink was a dog used a lot in breedings so it can be hard to find lines 'free' of him to breed into rather than continuing breeding more of mink in the lines. These 'adds' are not necessarily saying that Mink (in this instance) is a bad dog to have in your lines, just giving some options to all those people who have mink in the lines and may be looking for a dog to breed to without him in the pedigree.
