I'm pregnant and due any day. I'll be handling my dogs this way too for my son's safety, for my sanity and for managing the amount of stress on my dogs during a period of a lot of change.
Vicki, I have 4 children and my youngest is 2 when we brought her home, I introduced her to each of my gsd one at a time, and I held her in my arms they came sniff (again separately) the blanket she was wrapped into, then when they came close to her face ,they knew by my body language that was not a place for them to stick their nose but they were very intrigued and I would put her little bouncy chair on my big kitchen table and they could see her but not get close to lick her and as they see me with the baby through out the day they realise that that baby is very important.Over night they learn that when the baby cries I come running and every night they would beat me to the door knowing that is where I was heading..I have never had a problem with my dogs and my children NEVER.I think you always have to treat your dog around a child like it's another toddler that is intrigued. You can't leave them together with no supervision.I could not leave my own 3 year old with her infant sister so why would I leave my dogs with my infant but you can have them together in the same room with supervision and confidence in your leadership with your dogs..When I would put the baby in the playpen, the dogs could see her and realize that she was not to be stepped on ,licked non stop and so on..A playpen is a good place when you have dogs, it keeps the baby out of paws reach..we never called 911 except for once and that was not the dogs doing something to my children it was my 3 year old shoving a mentos candy in her infants sisters' mouth while I ran to answer the phone.
