I am interested in training for this and am looking for descriptions of the course, training aides or hopefully, a DVD of the test. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Lorri Pohl Rowlett
Near as I can see, that's a rescue dog programme (curse my nearly non-existent German). I suppose that your best bet would be to look up and contact the relevant local authorities as requirements and training do vary from place to place.
The RH is a fairly new title. It is designed to highlight another aspect of the work German Shepherds do.
The recent Schutzhund USA magazine has a nice article describing it in detail.
There is an obedience phase and a search phase.
The obedience has the following:
A group of four or more people
Gunshot
Motor noises such as a chain saw or lawn mower
Walking over uncomfortable materials such as stones, wooden pallets, sheet metal or boards. There is a platform in the middle of the 'debris' where th dog must do a sit beside the handler (basic positon)
Two jumps over obstacles at least 40 cm high (~16"). The jumps must be at least two meters apart. Boards, pipes, barrels or boxes may be used.
Dog Carry -- You pick your dog up and carry him to another person (stranger) and they carry the dog for a short distance (ten meters, about 30').
A recall. The dog is allowed to roam off lead. It it then called and must return to the handler. The 'Front & Finish' isn't required.
The search is similar to a Schutzhund I or II track. That is 400 paces, laid by the handler with three articles. The track is aged at least 30 minutes.
One twist is the alert test. This is in addition to the regular track. A stranger hides about 30 (100') away from the dog and handler. On command, the dog must independently search the area and find the person. The dog must indicate the find by barking.
The test will be administered through the United Schutzhund Clubs of America. You can get that magazine and join at http://www.GermanShepherdDog.com/
You can also find a link to a nearby club on that website.
btw, the back page of that issue features two of Leerburg's finest. ;D
Yeah, I read the magazine (and saw the Leerburg dogs, nice shot Charlie). That is what got me started looking into this. I read some of the rules on the USA yahoo group but I am still unsure about:
the jumps, what are they and how many/ how high?
the tracking articles, shoe sized? and the indication for that, barking and/or retrieving. My brain just won't make the leap to training that without blowing my Schutzhund platz at the article.
is there a pattern to the obedience?
I would really like to do this with my female who is already SchH 1 and retired, it won't matter so much if I blow her tracking indications, but the other dogs are still being trained for Schutzhund and I am hesitant to screw that up.
Really wish Ed had gotten on here and said, " oh yes, I have a DVD on that"!
Thanks,
Lorri
