When I first got her I taught her to shake-this was last sept. She would shake when I asked, but the past week she has been giving me her paw without me asking, and doing it over and over. I think she would sit with me, and do it for hours, if I let her.
My dog does it too to some degree; several times a week maybe. It's really cute. If I'm on kneeling down next to him or sitting on the floor, something like that, he just gives me his paw or sort of gently paws at me.
I just assumed it was his doggie language for, "Have I told you lately that I love you"!

My boss got very upset when one of our staff taught his GSD to shake, I think for this very reason. His dog will now paw, even when not asked, as a form of begging/pushy behavior. He considers it a dog trick and bad manners.
That's the thing about teaching them to give you their paw: They'll do it all the time! I don't know what kind of dog you have, but I've always noticed that GSDs really like to use their paws for things. Carbon uses them more than his mouth when he's playing.

Hey Amber, I know you weren't posting to me but I had to comment on the "Carbon uses them more than his mouth" statement! Gunnar too!
We always joke that he must have been a professional boxer in a past life !
