I have a natural man-made lake close to my house. We throw the ball into the lake, in which my GS loves to go get. I was out there the other day and started thinking when he was lapping up the water in the lake. This is not a sprind fed lake ( as mentioned above). Is it safe to have him swimming in the lake? I saw him drink on one occasion. The other times I have not noticed him drinking. I'm sure he is getting water in his mouth when retreiving the ball as well. So, should I not do this?
He enjoys it so much. I hate to stop, but will if it is harmful. Please let me know ur opinions.
I'm not sure how many dogs handle this water. I've seen many people toss balls in the water or let their dogs go for a swim. The one and only time I took my dog fishing, I let her run and jump in the lake. She took a few drinks and she was soooo sick for 2 days. She got giardia and I had to take her to the vet.
well, if it was giardia, it would take a few weeks to show up.
i've let my dogs drink out of mud puddles and irrigation ditches and every other kind of body of water (except sea water) all my life and i've never had a problem. if your dog is in good health, her immune system is strong, she should be fine.
i doubt what she had was giardia from lake water if it showed up in two days.
