Hello! I'm a new member (1 day) and have been reading the boards while waiting for my membership to be approved. Wow, what a wealth of information. I think I'm on overload at the moment. I just received my videos this morning and am headed off to start watching them soon! I purchased 8 wks. to 8 mos., Basic Dog Obedience, Building Drive & Focus and Dealing with Dominant & Aggressive Dogs.
I have a Jug,(Jack Russel Terrier and pug mix), Niko, that is 18 mos. and Bella Mia, my 11 week old GSD. After all the mistakes I have made Niko, I want to get it right this time. Bella is not being raised as anything other than a companion. She didn't come with papers, but once I saw her I couldn't walk away from her. I did meet her mother and father and once they sniffed me out and was told I was okay, they were fine with me and seemed friendly. I wish I would have found this site prior to making my purchase, but I love her already and there is no going back... unless all of you experienced dog owners tell me I'm nuts for buying a pup that I don't know the pedigree on and that I'm just asking for trouble.
Bella seems smart. She is doing really well with sit and stay. Come seems to be the tougher of the three commands so far. She does better if I use a hand signal for stay for some reason. She goes in her crate when told about half the time. She'll also meandor in there on her own and lay down.
I know I have a lot to learn and am sure I'll have questions after watching the videos. I've been searching the archives and trying to glean what I can at this point. I look forward to my learning experience from the rest of you.
Sorry this is so long... here a few links to some pics I took this morning of Bella.
Hi Kristina and welcome to the forum. You seem to be on the right track. Knowone on this form is going to tell you your Nuts for getting your Niko! From what I understand anything that you may have messed up on with Niko can be corrected with a lot of patients. It is just easier to train right the first time, but retraining can be done.
I just got a 11 week old GSD myself. What a little ball of joy! He's doing really well and we are having a great time.
These forums are a wealth of information and many good folks on here willing to help.
Have a great day and enjoy Bella's puppyhood.
She's beautiful, and yes that innocent look is working
It shouldn't be a concern to you if she didn't come with papers unless you were planning on breeding her, and then to be a responsible breeder you wouldn't breed unless she can contribute to the GSD breed or carry on the desirable traits of a GSD. Here's a good set of goals for a responsible committed breeder, since I'm on the subject and in case you're interested in reading about it: http://www.leerburg.com/bredgols.htm
Thank you, Edward! We are just not sure what to do with Niko... we've been trying to use corrections on Niko. He's extremely strong for a 14 pound dog, very muscular. Cannot get him to come when off leash, no matter what. When trying to walk him on the leash, he pulls something terrible. Trying to correct him, even at like a level one, he cowers like in Ed's video You Killed Me. He totally ignores Bella when she's in her crate, but if taking them out, they just go after each other. We are beginning to think that maybe Niko should have been an only child. At first they played well together, but now that they are used to each other, forget it.
Congrats on your new GSD addition! Our biggest problem with our GSB pup at this stage is her urinating in her house. She is fine all night and all day, but as soon as we are home with her... take her out, she does Good Outside, play with her, then switch and put her in her crate and take Niko out, wham... she pees in her crate and it's off to the bath, which she absolutely hates!
