I am looking for information and advice and whether or not to spay my 5 month old GSD. Have any of you used the "Cheque drops"? I have not decided if I want to breed her at a later time.
I worked for a vet where some conformation people used these back in the 80's and 90's. I wouldn't use them on my dogs. Cheque drops are rumored to have been used by human athletes to increase aggression before big events (i.e. Mike Tyson's ear biting incident)
I don't believe in messing around with a dogs hormones any more than necessary. Managing heat cycles is not that difficult and it's much healthier for your dog in the long run to leave things as is.

Geesh, with the dogs that some of us have, these would probably end up being a nightmare for us......A MAL ON ROIDS!?!?!?! YIKES
I have an intact bitch and also a female pup on contract that the owners do not want altered due to her lineage, they want to see how she turns out first, but I have a kennel that is built for when they go through heat cycles. I would rather deal with the cycles that risk my dogs health with drugs.

You should wait to spay her til she is at least a year old and to her full adult size. What some people don't realize is that dogs need the hormones that make them grow to their adult size. I didn't. Now that I do, I'm waiting to neuter my choc. lab till he's at least a year old. My female GSD on the other hand, it's really easy to take care of a female in heat. If the dog is inside more often, get a doggie diaper and some pads(all you need). If outside more often, have on lead or watch at all times, if you can't do this, you should spay.
Keleah, you're right about needing the horomones, but they actually need them to CLOSE the growth plates. Otherwise, the femur keep growing, and you get a taller dog in the back, and one with joints (esp.hips) that don't fit right. 2 yrs is a "safe" amount of time to wait before spaying or neutering any large breed. Sorry to seem picky; I just wanted to clarify that point, so no one would say "I don't care if my dog is smaller..." etc., thinking that size was the only concern.
I use a ten by ten by ten kennel in the back yard which also fenced in and I have a stay at home Mom who keeps an eye on things. At night they are inside crated
Thanks to all for the comments. I have since done more research and decided that it was not a good idea to mess with Maya's hormones. I do want her to be as healthy as possible and do understand that for optimal growth and health, it is best for her to stay intact. I do have an outdoor kennel also and she is crated at night. I'm sure we can manage.

Keleah and Jenni,
I always thought that this hormone thing for growth was more for male dogs. So it applies to females as well? Seems most if not all the info available for this applies to males. Good to see some real info for this applying to females.
Does the reduction of aggressive tendencies lower when you spay a female like it does with a male to? Or does it make them more ornery if you wait until later?
