Dog training sessions shouldn't last for more than 5 mins, so it doesn't matter if you're working or not.
How old are they?
If you get the Basic Dog Obedience DVD you can't go wrong. Ed explains everything from markers to Sit, Down, Recall, Place, and some others. Plus you see him and Cindy at work.
i've read your training method. Just to let you know my history. I moved from Italy where I had a abruzzi moutain dog (who trained herslef) and a rottweiler. I owned both for 11 years. My wife is in the navy. we move every two years. these dogs just seem to need training. thank you for your message. b
I train in a little bit longer sessions (1/2 hour) that are broken down into play/tug, a new command, an old command and some silly games that my dogs like to play so every 2 or 3 minutes it's something different to give the dog a mental break and help them learn the new material.
I alternate between 3 dogs - 1/2 hr with #1, 1/2 hr with #2, 1/2 hr with #3 and start all over again as many times as I can squeeze in a day.
I consider play and training to be exactly the same thing, so these are not hard, formal sessions, but bits of play and learning all mixed together.
I keep a journal for each dog's training, starting with a list of goals and broken down into a rough time-table of how I think we'll get there. I note each training session and what I think should be done in the next session. It's pretty amazing how much progress a dog can make in 2 weeks!
I apply this to all sorts of training for all ages of dogs and puppies - pups getting much more play and less "learning" in a training session. With a little care and creativity I'm sure you could adapt it to your goals with your dogs.
