Hi I'm a first time GSD puppy owner, raw feeder. My puppy is 12 weeks old.
I started him out on THK Embark, started to add chicken livers, eggs, or beef ribs about once a day.
I then let him have a half of a cornish hen a few times. No problems other than he took awhile to pass the cornish hen, about 12 hours.
Yesterday I fed him at noon half of a chicken, less wings, breast, leg and shin/fat. This morning he passed the remains. It wasn't much but I did find a few chucks of the chicken back. It was about 1/2" square, and a few small pieces of ribs. Just worried about him not chewing the bones up enough. Is this a normal BM considering?
Thanks, Eddie

I think you are adding too much variety too soon. Stick with soft, easy to digest parts of the chicken (i.e. the breast) for now.
It might help for you to post exactly how much of each thing you have been feeding and how often.
besides the bone chunks, what is the consistency of the stools?
Are you still feeding THK also?

Hi Cindy, thanks for the reply.
I went three days on THK Embark only. 1/2 cup plus water morning noon and evening. No issues at all.
Then I added a beef rib a few time for desert He can't consume the bone but loves to chew on it. I figured it may get him use to chewing bones well.
Then I started to add an egg or a few ounces of chicken liver chopped up in one of his THK meals per day over a few days.
BM's are consistantly soft but formed up to this point.
Then I feed him THK morning, 1/2 cornish hen less skin, fat, wing, leg and breast for lunch, THK for dinner.
I tried THK morning 1/2 Cornish Hen for lunch with skin fat and THK for dinner. He has a loose BM with mucous looking second BM shortly after first. I discontinued feeding him the skin and fat.
I also feed THK morning, THK lunch with one egg, and two beef ribs for dinner.
So basically I've been feeding him 2 1/2 cup THK meals with one RAW meal per day.
It's really just the size of the bones in his BM after the chicken back I am worried about.
Thanks, Eddie

It takes a while for many dogs to start the normal production of the enzymes that digest bones.
I would stick with soft cartilage-y parts for now, like the backs and breasts you mentioned, in small amounts. I would skip beef for now. I'd stick with the light poultry at first, too, rather than liver and eggs.
I would use a little of the soft-boned meat at first and look at the next poop. Since you are feeding THK, you have a totally balanced diet anyway.
So you can go slooooow.
P.S. Organ meat s/b only 5-10% of the food....... so a little piece of liver (later on, when all is back to normal) would be all you'd start with, with a little dog.

P.S. Like Cindy, I'm all for one addition at a time, with a couple of days in between. That means you can gauge precisely what did it, if there is ever an issue.
It's gentle on the system, too, to acclimate to each new thing one at a time. :>

That is pretty much what I did. Everything new was spaced out by three days. The only issues I've had so far are:
1. Loose BM, due to skin and fat left on cornish hen. That's begin removed from now on.
2. This morning 2- 1/2" or maybe 3/8" square piece of chicken back and a few small peices of rib or? in BM, took 14 hours to pass.
3. Tonight I mixed in 1/4 cup of ground beef with 1/4 cup THK. No issues at all. He is way more active tonight as well, my socks and toes can atest to that! He is fired up!
Other than that all is well. Had no issues with egg, liver or beef other than it took longer to pass that just THK alone.
Thanks for the input, still wondering if the bone I found is something to be concerned about?

I'm new to this too, Edward, but I know I've read something here that said it wasn't unusual to see small pieces/fragments of bone when you first start out. Richard Pryor shared a picture of the bone his beagle pup passed during his first few days on raw.
I find with this new diet I seem to spend an awful lot of time looking at and thinking about my pup's poop.

Until you have a dog, you just cannot understand why anyone would look at poop. LOL
I was impressed that today my pup left me (3) separete piles of nice sturdy firm stools this morning before breakfast. He must have thought he was done going and then moved on to a new spot, 'cause he has never done the several location thing before.
As you recall, this pup has been struggling to have even a nice firm stool even after the diahreah issues have diminished.
Who would have thought that I would ever have even a passing thought about any stool? :-)
Cheers!
