I just got done watching a news clip on Central Florida 13 where they were talking about the ever increasing recall on pet foods. They cut to an interview clip with a veterinarian (Dr. something Cruz I think) and says:
"With this recall people are tempted to feed some of these raw diets, but there are bacteria that could compromise the animals along with the people feeding it."
End clip. I just want to scream. Tell me does everyone buy all their meat pre-cooked or something that I am missing? Because correct me if I'm wrong but we all come in contact with tons of bacteria constantly.
I would have thought with this recall it would open people up to alternative feeding strategies, but nope. Still the same old ignorance.
I'm going to vet school in a year and I swear to god I'm going to preach proper raw feeding till the cows come home.
I saw a Dr. Willis (?) on CNN yesterday and wanted to jump through the screen and do her great bodily harm. She said we should just continue feeding what we had been - blah - blah - blah - she actually laughed when the reporter asked if she thought many, many animals would be affected.
On the upside though, my local news featured a story on the pluses of raw diets and had a holistic vet on...very nice!
I actually heard about Pookies Bow Wow Bakery being on the TV here in Orlando promoting their frozen raw diets and GOOD kibbles due to the recalls. It goes both ways.
I've seen two different people that FOX had on to talk about the recall. The first had brought along her bag of Purina One to demonstrate what was in a quality kibble. And the second one advised to "remember, when switching your dogs food, be sure to switch your dog over slowly so they don't get digestive trouble." Hello?! So if you find out your feeding your dog poison, continue to feed it to him for a few days so he doesn't get an upset tummy??!
I have a check-up schelduled for one of my dogs in a few days. It will be the first one since I switched her to raw, and I'm very interested in what my vet is going to say about it. In light of recent events, I think the deck is stacked in my favor.
And I agree that Connie needs to hold that news conference!
