Hi.. I have a Jackrat puppy that is a yr old in may that has been sick with vomiting and diarhea off and on since a wk ago monday so it has been 9 days
26th monday afternoon started throwing up and all she wanted to eat was grass..i gave her yogurt, milk and egg and she threw it all up no fever
27th feelling better did'nt throw up all day..stool was loose and loaded with grass..vet said to give safeguard for 3 days
28 ...acted fine eating good ..stool looked good
29....threw up thursday afternoon just once never acted sick back eating full dimond dry dog food
30 and 31st...acted good..thought the safeguard had worked
1st...She came out of her crate and drank water and started throwing up, she threw up everything she ate sunday started giving her nutrical and yogurt by syringe kept some down..back to loose stool ..late sunday night gave her small amount of brown rice and hamburg
2nd.. threw up during the night..gave her more rice and hamburg and she threw it up in 15mins. waited 2hrs and gave her yogurt and nutrical she kept that down and hasn't thrown up since. Took her to the vet she did a stool sample and found coccidia she did'nt think enough to make her act like this she put her on something for vomiting and 2cc 2xday SMZ for coccidia. N ow she is eating good ..I am feeding her 3xday 2tbsp rice,1tbsp yogurt, chicken broth, few pieces of diamond food soaked in water, tiny bit of hamburg..is this good? She is acting like she is starving what do you reccomend feeding her? Her stool this morning was quite soft loaded with rice but she has not thrown up at all . What is a good diet for this kind of situation? Should I let her eat grass when I walk her? The main thing this concerned mom wants toknow is how fast to get her back on her dog food because it seems like I got her on to fast last wk and it started all over again and worse..don't want that to happen again.
Please let me know what you would do..my vet did'nt seem to know what to feed . She told me plain rice but she would'nt eat it so we added the chicken broth..so that's why I'm asking.
I don't think this has anything to do with the recall...they did have alpo several wks ago but nobody else is sick and i don't have the cans to check anyway.
Thanks for listening and caring

What did the vet think it was? Did they do a culture on a stool sample, bloodwork or anything?!?
If they did not, I would find a different vet.
Or did she test positive for coccidia?
If she is eating and keeping it down, boil some chicken without the fat (I use boneless skinless breasts) and some white rice.
Don't add anything until she is eating really well and keeping it down and then add small amounts of something different one at a time. This way, you will know what is bothering her stomach and what is not.
And, just FYI, do not feed kibble and raw or cooked food at the same time.
Mash the chicken in with the rice with your hands if you have to, this will encourage her to eat the rice. Save the broth that is made from boiling the chicken as well. This can be used as an enticer also.

Yes to what Carol said! There seems to be a rash of loose stool issues going on lately...
What worked for me (my dog had vomiting and explosive water diarrhea) was exactly what Carol just said. Nothing else would work.
Plain boiled WHITE rice--75%, plain boiled (boneless) chicken breast--25%. A tablespoon of yogurt (plain) per day and NOTHING else.
I actually boiled the rice and the chicken in the same pot so that the broth that he got was natural and without added anything (some weird things can be in store bought broth). I would skip the hamburger or kibble or anything else.
Stick to this diet for a couple/few days and I bet you'll see an improvement. Then slowly add back in regular food.
Any yes, I would prevent your dog from eating grass. In the best of circumstances in can make your dog throw up, in the worst case it can have fertilizer and the like on it and make the situation worse. Either way, I doubt it's good for your dog's current situation.
Please keep us posted!
How long has your dog been eating diamond? Is this a new switch? You said your vet found coccidia in your dog's stool. You said she didn't think it was enough to cause these problems in your dog...but you have a little dog. If you think your vet doesn't know what to do, don't be afraid to try a second opinion. Second opinions are GOOD sometimes. Not all vets are created equal.
Also, what is your dog's water source? Does she drink from puddles? Well water? Where is the grass that she's been consuming? From your yard or from somewhere else?

Mindy is acting real good today ..just the loose stool. She acts like she's starving but I am feeding her real slowly. I will give her just chicken and white rice..how about adding peas? Someone said that. I have never had a dog do this. The vet did say she had coccidia that is why she is on SMZ. We are on a farm and the only grass she has eaten is out back where I walk them and nothing has been put on it or anything. I have 17 dogs..mostly rescues and the others are eating it . Our water is well water and that's all she gets. I stop her from drinking or eating anything outside as fast as I can but they are fast her penmate her sister got into wild animal feces and I got it out of her mouth as fast as I could but we do live on a farm and that's going to happen...they've done it right along I'm just being more careful. Her sister is on SMZ as well because they live in the same kennel. Thanks for your help..God BLESS

The penmate is telling you she wants to go RAW by eating wild animal poop.....hee hee I am Just Kidding
I would not add anything but rice and chicken. For at least 4 or 5 days. Then incorporate new things slowly.

I'm with Carol. IME, the slower the better when adding ingredients after a bout of diarrhea.
I don't even think about balanced diets when the system is recovering itself -- just soothing, bland, easy-to-digest mush.

Hi, from experience, my Little 1 of 14 wks had the similar problem, no throwing up but bad diarhea...she was also weary of what she ate and ate very little..i have stopped all intake of anything, ans started on boiled rice in the morning with chicken fillets cur into strips. in the afternoon its boiled rice with pumkin, and in the evenings its dry kibble...
she has been eating it without question, and hasnt had any diarhea since the first day i started this diet.
the only problem i have now is that she is getting fat...her stomach is round since yesterday. i took her out for a run and some play but she wouldnt run..seemed very slow and uneager t run. so i skipped supper an sent her to bed with no food last time they were fed was around 3 the afternoon.. this morning she was a lot more energetic but still fat and round..its going to be tough to get her back to the sleek slim self she was...
any idea what could have made her swell up like this? could it be the rice?

I know exactly what the others would say
Take the advice above and STOP feeding your dog kibble for now. Just boiled rice and chicken with no bones or skin. Until she is completely better.
If she has swelled up then something else is going on.
Did you have her stool tested?

Unless this is already resolved with an big gas passing or poop, I'd be on my way to the vet -- NOW.
I'm not puppy-experienced.
Someone else?

I'm no expert, but a sudden enlargement of the abdomen sounds like a potently dangerous condition! It certainly is not normal. If it still exists, I second the recommendation to get to the vet ASAP!
