It's funny you should mention it...I saw a show last night that had a section on them; first time I had heard of them.
Apparently they are naturally VERY aggressive, guarding with little or no training. But from what I understand they are MAJOR league aggression and about 180lbs. And the show said they don't really take their cues from their owners. The dog decides when guarding is necessary. Even the breeders that were interviewed said that most people would not be able to handle this dog...
What they didn't mention was the intelligence of the dog. They did say they were very hard to train. Hmm.
Impressive looking and intense, but I'll stick to my GSD.
PS-Just checked the link you provided and that is one of the breeders they interviewed for the show. Apparently they're pretty rare.

Amber,
I believe that some of the Caucasian Mountain Dog Breeders were very upset with way their dogs were portrayed on that NGC show that you saw.
Try a search on this forum, there has been some discussion on Caucasian Mountain Dogs already.
Edited to Add........
If you find the website of the breeders interviewed for that show, they use to have a page denouncing the NGC show and their portrayal of the breed.

I actually bought the very first book written on the breed years ago .It is "Caucasian Mountain Dog" by a long time breeder and importer Stacey Layne Grether Kubyn.A great book.
Amber this breed are in shows, they are trainable as well, to say ( not you but the show)that they are so darn aggressive and bad dogs to own is far from reality. They are the type of breed that is very protected by their breeders NOT to end up in the wrong hands. As a matter of fact Stacey will have you fill out an application and ask a lot of questions before she even thinks about selling you a pup. Some breeders want to scare the mojority of these dogs to keep unwanted people away, rather that works or not I don't know. They are beautiful and social if you socialize them. They need a good amount of terrain to roam but they can make great family dogs and great guard dogs.I traveled to see these dogs in person and saw a beautiful litter. But I love the breed and the reason why i don't own one today is because of their coats and the fact that my husband wants us to wait until we have more room (land) But they are pretty impressive to say the least....And by the way it is a shepherd from the former USSR

Well hopefully no one thinks I was bashing the breed! I have personally never met a Caucasian Mountain Dog or anyone who's ever owned them so I have no experience on them whatsoever. And James, I know what you mean about selective editing.
I got the impression (from the breeders interviewed on the show) that they were trying to emphasize the fact that the dogs were too much to handle for the average dog owner. I think that's probably true. Any dog that big with genetic aggression would require an experienced owner. One of the breeders was demonstrating how aggressive an 8 week old puppy was. Makes for good TV, I guess
But the way the show went on, I was thinking to myself that they were sensationalizing it to the point that while it may scare off people who only want Labs, those badass people that only want a tough dog for status symbol were going to be suddenly very interested in this breed.
I'm not sure if this is the same show that you're talking about or not James? It only had a small section on the Caucasian. It was about Designer dogs. Now that I think about it, why would the Caucasian even be on that show...I seem to remember hearing that it was a very old breed and pretty much unchanged for a hundred years or so...hardly a designer dog.

You can portrait a German Shepherd the same way, just give the leash to a irresponsible dog owner and he can make ANY breed look out of control. No shortage of them out there. All dogs have natural aggression.I have seen plenty of 8 week old puppies that growl and try dominating others and so on, so what.If by seeing that on the show it makes you worry about that breed than you have not been around the dog world long enough to know that "natural aggression" is in every breed of dogs, and it doe snot start when they are 2 years of age for that breeder to point that out in the show she should stop owning dogs let alone breed them.
Thanks for that link, I had read that long ago, when the show came out.it is pretty pathetic the way some film producers want
to "shock" at any cost..

True, and that has been done as we all know. Shepherds, Rotties, Pits and on and on.
If by seeing that on the show it makes you worry about that breed than you have not been around the dog world long enough to know that "natural aggression" is in every breed of dogs
Angelique, was this a general "you" or specifically addressed to me?
Lance, thanks for posting that link. It's good to hear the other side of the story. It did say in the article that there were people suddenly interested in the dog because it would be "cool" as a result of that story and I understand why the good breeders were ticked about it.
I had a kid bopping around while the show was on, and had a conversation going as well...I wish I had paid more attention now...I missed the part that was mentioned in the article about the dog pulling the guy off of his feet and some of the other parts that were sensationalized.

ah yes that was a funny episode... all of the "great dogs" the man your talking about amber said he had owned many protection dog breeds and this was the worst one which if that were true why did he have one??... I personally belive no dog by nature is dangerous the danger part comes with training (or lack their of) most every thing I heard about that cuite dog was dont get it, it is mean nasty and a danger... I am wondering A. who is the dip stick that said this was a designer dog and B. who had this idea to find the bad a**es of the breed... again we see the negative light being shined on another innocent breed that is most likely very sweet and loving like the awsome dobies and rotties (which are always demed a "devil dog")

They certainly were gorgeous looking dogs. Maybe they can do an episode on the fierce and dangerous Yorkie's next. I've seen some vicious ones. They'd eat your heart out, man!
