I live in a trailer court in a double-wide and received notification from the owner last night upon getting home from work that all tenants (I own the double-wide, rent the lot) must get rid of their dogs by May 1st. I am devastated and so angry I could scream. I wonder if he would like it if someone left a note on his door that he had to get rid of his children by May 1st. All of this is because we have one tenant in the park that has two dogs. They are outside dogs and the one breaks off his chain on a weekly basis and they bark constantly. The one dog (mixed breeds from the Humane Society) is mean. He has bit my son and all the kids in the park are afraid of it. According to the park owner, he has had numerous complaints about dogs in the park and the only way to be fair is to make it a rule that no dogs are allowed. This is totally not fair. My pup is NEVER off lease outside unless she is in her kennel and my Jug is the same, though he has snuck out behind one of my children about 4 times in 18 months. We immediately get him back in the house. He has never pottied in anyone else's yard or nothing. It isn't like he is left to wander around the court. I told the park owner that a fair thing to do would be to enforce the leash law and make dog owners have kennels for when their dogs are outside. Nevermind the gazillion cats that are running around. Cats are allowed... well, allowed if they are to be indoor cats. What happens is everyone gets the kittens because they are so cute and then when the kitten stage is over, they put them outside and forget about them. They get in the garbage, they tear insulation out from underneath our mobile homes and sh*t in our yards... AND my other son had to go through rabies shots because one cat bit him and no one would claim it to say whether or not it had its rabies shot and we couldn't find the cat until about 2 weeks after he went through the shots! But that's okay... *eye roll*
Anyway, I'm sorry to rant... I'm just so upset by this. My kids are devastated. We have until May 1st to find a new home for our dog and our pup. I have so much money tied up them as well as time, training and love. The kennel, the crates, the toys, the DVD's I just bought from Ed, the toys and training leash and grooming tool I just bought from Ed. I'm just sick... I feel like I'm being made to get rid of two of my children.
I wish I could just up an move... but I still owe on my mortgage and can't afford to have the double-wide broke up and moved.
I don't want to just give my dogs away. I know what kind of a home they are in and how they are treated. I don't know anyone that would take them... I do work with a girl that would love to have my Jug, but doesn't want another large dog and Bella is so sweet! Gawd, this is killing me.
Trying my innocent look, is it working? |

That's awful. I'm glad that where I live, it's illegal to disallow dogs unless you're renting out a room/apartment in your own home. They can only evict you if your dog has bitten someone or done significant damage to the property, from what I understand.
Is there any way you could board the dogs (I know that's expensive..) Any family or friends or anyone who could hold onto them until you find a new place? Hope you find a solution.
Good luck.

Wow Heather that just awful! Seems like 20 some days is an completely unreasonable amount of time. Maybe get the other dog owners together and contact the news stations. Or find a attorny that's willing to help. I'd make them evict me before I got rid of my dogs! I hope you find a way to work it out!

I am not a lawyer, but I just don't think this is legal. You own your own home even if you do rent the land it's on. I know the owner can change the policy so new people can't have dogs, but I don't think he can force the current dog owners to give theirs up. Before I gave up my dogs, I would contact a lawyer first.

Is there any way you can rent your place out to someone and make sure rent covers the mortgage, then you go rent somewhere with your dog?
I am sorry for the situation you are in at this time.

What kind of rental agreement did you sign for the lot?
If you OWN your doublewide, how can they tell you you can't keep your dogs there? I'm with Elaine, I'd be calling a lawyer.

Even though you own the mobile, I think the owner of the park does have the right to say who & what can live in the park. Did you sign a lease or do you have a written contract stating your dogs are allowed? If so, double check with an attorney as to what recourse you have. Even if there is nothing written, by allowing everyone to have pets, he has given his approval up to this point. It seems crazy that the landlord can change the rules midstream, let alone give you virtually no time. Maybe it would be a good idea if you and the other pet owners band together on this. I wouldn't give up without a fight.

I agree with those who said CONTACT AN ATTORNEY.
As a very last resort, contact your local breed rescue (I assume you have pure-bred dogs) and see if they can get someone to temporarily foster the dogs until you can figure something out. Generally fostered dogs are kept in a home with someone, not left in a kennel.
Giving you two months to re-home your dogs, doesn't seem legal.
