Shepherds are such wimps. I`ve seen the CGC test given dozens of time and the GSD`s are big babies. On the separation part my older male sat and didn`t try to leave but focused on the door I went out and cried the whole time.
The only thing needed for evil to exist is for good men to stand by and do nothing!!!
I'm not sure what else to do about this, we've practiced this in the past and he's been fine. With a stranger in a strange place, he just can't do it.
Don't be discouraged! He just showed you what you need to work on...strangers in a strange place. He'll get it! Just be patient. I have faith in both of you. It sounds like you have a really good dog.

Roger, if you actually believe that, would you mind holding Fetz for me while I walked out of sight? I promise he won't whine. He may however protest at being restrained.....
Scout took his CGC test today and passed all but the owner separation portion. He barked and lunged when I left the room and failed. I'm not sure what else to do about this, we've practiced this in the past and he's been fine. With a stranger in a strange place, he just can't do it.
I don't think this is an all together bad thing though, since he's an assistance dog.
THe only problem would be if I'm unable to take him into a place and have to leave him with someone....

You wouldn't ever leave him with a stranger if you can't take him into a place though, would you? And if you leave him with a friend outside and he whines or barks till you get back, so what? If he's to be an assistance dog, it's not natural that you would leave him with a stranger in any circumstance. He did pass the CGC test in what mattered, and if the requirement of being left with a stranger in a strange place while you leave is mandatory for passing their "test", then who cares. It sounds like a dumb requirement anyway. I wouldn't want my GSD to pass that requirement. GSDs want to be with their owners, by their side, period. It's who they are. To me, he did the right thing. Yeah for Scout!
