I had a quick question on teaching a pup the about turn for Schutzhund obedience.
I did a quick search but found nothing really specific on this in the forum, I apologize if I missed it.
I am teaching my pup this but he is so excited about being alive, and the food, ( I learned real quick not to start with a ball) and being with me; that it is hard to get him to do a clean about turn. In other words he does this goofy puppy dance all the way around to the other side. I just switch the food behind my back. Is it my technique? Any suggestions?

The very best way is of course to have a competent trainer or fellow handler show you the move and repeat it until you've got it down pat.
May I suggest practicing the move *without* your dog first, until you feel comfortable doing it? That will help make the motion when the dog is involved more comfortable for you both.
In my club I march the new handlers up and down the field in the SchH pattern without their dogs until they can do it by themselves under stress. You'd be amazed how few clubs will take the time to do this simple yet important step.
