I know that bloat is still pretty mysterious, and the jury is out on the exact causes, but I go along with the suggestion to feed deep- and narrow-chested breeds twice a day instead of once.

Like Connie, my vet stated the best reason for feeding twice a day is to lessen the chance of bloat (gastric torsion). I also think it is better for the dog's digestion, but this is personal opinion and not a fact that I know of (Especially if your dog is getting used to a new diet and getting accustomed to digesting bones).

That said, I think the prey model raw feeders like to feed once a day, or less. Let the dogs get full on a meal as a wolf would, with some fasting in between. Not right for my life style but some swear by it. It seems to me that a very full dog would be dangerous to exersise/work (because of bloat), and just not that into it. If I ever moved to once a day, I would feed an hour after our evening exersise session, and he would have the quiet evening to digest. My dog gets hyper after feeding, although I don't have a breed that is prone to bloat, there are Toller's that have died from it. I do know an Akita and a German Short Hair (both kibble fed)that have died from it. Horrible. Cheers,

I'm not sure if I can post a link to my site here or not but if I can let me know and I will so you can see my boys and girls! My site isn't much yet though Jennifer, I have 2 trained Police k9's 1 is now retired and the other is currently working and I have always been told to allow at least 2 hours after and before work to feed them to avoid the bloat. I have dealt with my retired K9 having a mild case of the bloat whereas no stomach flip but all the signs such as bloating, tender to touch etc. ...scary thing! but fortunatly it all worked out. Edited to say I also feed chicken backs as my foundation and throw in wings and necks and quarters for variation.

I never work my dogs for at least 2 hours after meals & don't feed for at least an hour or so after exercise...2 hours or more after heavy exercise. MY DOGS...MY RULES
