I have a 9.5 week old Boerboel puppy. For some reason, he doesn't like to go outside for walks or even to stand outside most of the the time. Will a prong collar help him walk outside with a slight tug and lots of praise?

I'd drag his butt outside and make him deal with it, don't need a prong collar, if he doesn't take to the prong/pain that young then it will just make his experience of going outside even worse. From the Boerboels I have seen, which is only a couple, your best option is to spend alot of time as a puppy exposing them to lots of things. Make him do it, but you don't need a correction collar to do so. Once he realizes he's not gonna die out there he'll figure it out. Use food to help relieve his stress if he'll eat it. Make going outside the most fun thing in his life and don't go back inside until he's stopped acting panicky. Then when you turn around to go back inside don't let him drag you back to the house, simply stop every 10ft or so and let him stop panicking trying to get back to the house and let him understand he doesn't need to be in a hurry because outside is a wonderful place.

A lot of praise and play works for a puppy. The tug and correction stuff has to be subtle at first - in my opinion.
A word of caution: don't let your training schedule and expectations lead to over corrections, or an expected behavior in a puppy that should be more the behavior of a mature dog. Patience.
Yup, what he said.

Thank you all for your advice.
I guess what I'm really saying is, I do take him out all the time, I praise him and give him food but that only lasts for about a minute and he wants to go back in. He shakes alot when he's out, maybe he's nervous about something. The second day I had him, I walked with him for abot an hour with no problem, now he seems extremely hesitant.

He is way too young for a pinch collar. Does he like tug, toy or ball? Keep him occupied with food & toys while he is out. Take him in while he still wants more. An hour is too long to walk him at 9.5 weeks. Just take him out to the front yard & play with him.

I agree with Susan's advice. Find what seems to float his boat inside the house. Is it a ball or food, favorite toy? This is your job to figure out as a trainer/pet owner. Use it to motivate him for short periods of time ( like 2-3 minutes) and gradually work up. Don't be in a hurry. This is the mistake that most people make with their dog. If your on a walk (and right now it should really just be playing) and he's showing signs of this nervousness your talking about try speeding up a little and motivate the heck out of him. Your time for quite awhile should be spent forming a relationship with the pup. It's the same template God used when he created man. You need a porch built before you walk into someones life.

My pup was insecure about new places when he was young. He would whine anytime we went anywhere new and seemed unsure anywhere except our house/yard.
So, I started taking treats and tossing them for him inside, saying "Get it!" and he'd scamper off to chase the treat. Once he became familiar with the game inside, I started doing it outside...letting him sniff in the grass to find the treat. He loved the game and it kept his mind of worrying so much. Eventually, that's the game I used to get him used to walks in strange places.
It really helped A LOT and now, at 6 months, Carbon is one of the most confident dogs you could hope to meet.
I'm sure your dog will grow out of this, but it's really important that you don't overwhelm your puppy even more by giving corrections. Think of a human baby...if that baby was nervous or scared, "correcting" would only serve to amplify the baby's fear. You have to always keep your pup's maturity level in mind. The best way to make your pup more confident is to let him discover that there really is nothing to worry about. And don't let him stand there and worry...activate his mind in a game or fun. It doesn't take long for the worry to be replaced with anticipation of the fun to be had!
Good luck!

What Mike said.
When he's being a dork, you turn to stone and continue on with forward progress. When he displays any inklking of confidence and self-initiated forwardness and curiousity, you're the happiest most funnest most treat-dispensing guy in the world. You know you'll have arrived when he turns into a leash puller, wanting to check everything out.
You know uou're not gonna do anything to hurt your pup, so...he's gonna have to deal...figure out his own way outta minor stresses. Just can't turn into a worry wort on his behalf.

Can you clarify this a bit? You walked with him for about an hour? or you were just outside w/him about an hour?
