I'm new to this board. I have been told by several trainers to give my GSD's brewers yeast. Ed Frawley saids that yeast increases problems with allergies. Does anyone have any bad experiences with brewers yeast?
I have heard that many dogs (and cats) can have allergic reactions to yeast. I also read somewhere that it is a kidney irritant. Since I see no benefit to it (the B vitamins can be gotten from other sources), I don't use it. Garlic is another one. Garlic is an ingredient in many dog food recipes, but I have read in several places that over time, garlic (and onions) destroy red blood cells in dogs, resulting in a type of anemia.
Yeast glycosylate (add sugars to) proteins differently than plants and animals. This difference in glycosylation has been suggested as a key factor in instigating an immune response against yeast or yeast products.
When fed this has the same potential to cause allergies as other proteins. Not all dogs (or even most) will have these problems but they are a real possibility.
Yeast are an excellent source of nutrients, including B vitamins and protein, but I have heard of people feeding this product for reasons other than as a protein or vitamin source. Why are you thinking of adding this to your dogs diet?
The trainer of my 2 gsd's (Steve Welsh) suggested that we add the yeast to the food. I have come across a couple of websites that suggest not to give it to them. I can't remember what the train said it was good for, but I haven't seen any change with them off of it.
Garlic would need to be fed in large quantities and for long periods of time to cause anemia. I feed it to my dogs but not every day and I will go for a period of time without it.
