I have been reading old posts on the site about everything and I came across sooo many people buying dogs, then wondering how to train them, or if they are a good fit for their household and training agends???
I guess that I have never been exposed to people doing this with animals?? Much larger problem than I had even realized?? Ok, buy a car on a whim and then hate it, but not a dog????
Was i just Nieve (sp?) or is it this prevelant in the US????
Just read a post on how some lady wanted to make her FILA not dislike strangers, and at the same tim attack without command???
What the....
ok just was looking for a little imput on gow some breeders here see this happening with them.
I'm thinking that it happens more with the cheap ($$) puppy mill type dog breeders becasue of the dollar investment, but I'm sure it hapens to the more high end (I know it sounds like buying a stereo, but I can't put it into any other words??) breeders as well??
Just a little venting here???

It's a trend I've noticed as well. People like the "look" or popularity of a breed without taking needs and temperament into consideration, or they want a breed to enhance their machismo. Good breeders usually screen people carefully. I know we do. We've turned away MANY more folks than we've sold puppies to. Seems some folks just don't realize how diverse dogs can be until after the purchase. It's too bad more people don't do the research first, because when they don't it's hard on them AND the dog.

I think you're accurate on the fact that the problem is generated more by mills and pet stores. The breeders that I have worked with all had a questionaire, application, interview with prospective buyers, and some even did an in home visit to see how and where the dogs would be living.
Then again, speaking of cars, a friend of mine is a mechanic and he told me a tale about someone (gendre witheld ) that bought a new car and a week later came into his shop with it because, "it was broken". The thing was brand new and he fixed it all up for h...; and all he charged was the cost of the gas to fill the tank! Just goes to show you that stupidity has no bias.

Adam, You are right. There are alot of people that buy a dog without knowing what it takes, there are people who buy dogs thinking they know all they need to know. I know of a case where a lady has a large breed dog, small yard, and works full time. This means she puts the dog in a crate for 8-10 hours a day, then has no yard for the dog to move around. I am amazed how people can rashionalize sp? this behavior, I'm sure we all know of some dumb a-- who isn;t doing right by their dog. By the same token a lot of breeders sell all of their pups whithout looking at the temperment of the dog. I do not believe every dog born has to be sold and has to have a home. Breeders are as responsible for the dog and its placement as the people buying the dog. Good observation! I'm sure we will have some one on here say every dog born should live and have a home. I say every dog should be looked at, and if it does'nt represent the breed 100% put it down. Protect the breed and protect the people. Now with that said some one will be up set. Please dont be. It is only one mans opinion.

I couldn't agree more!
And if you find a breeder who doesn't have beliefs along those lines: RUN, don't walk.

Not in agreement for putting imperfect dogs down though. Perfection is not only impossible but subjective. Not everyone is into purebreds, either.

It's too bad that it's a very common attitude. I have a hard time placing rescue dogs because people think that any home is better than a foster home and they expect the dog to be "free to a good home." I stopped putting ads in the paper for rescues because I was turning down EVERYONE (for good reason!).
FYI - Humane association surveys show that abandonment is most common with animals purchased for less than $100.

Ouch! I've learned more about dogs and dog behavior from my one "imperfect" dog (who happens to be a perfect fit for me), then I would have learned from 10 "perfect" dogs.

I know what you mean. It makes my blood boil when I get the "if you really wanted to find a home for the dog you wouldn't charge" or when I see "I want a dog but I don't want to go through the effort of adopting from the shelter because they have too many requirements." I assume by that the person means the vet reference and horrors! adoption contract.
You want to see dumb people looking for dogs- go to craigslist.org.

I have to put my 2 cents in here. I think it depends on the extent of the imperfections. If we're talking a sound dog, but not quite breed standard, you have a very nice pet-quality dog, or you might have a wonderful working dog. If we are talking health problems, birth defects, etc, then I think it's better to put the pup down. If the pup is unhealthy, it probably won't thrive, and may not have a very good quality of life, better to cull.
