Thanks Richard! I'm still in the learning phase for the BARF diet, not sure I'm ready to completely switch my dogs to it, but I want to know what I'm doing if I do.
I feed BARF, and I do include yogurt, for the reason that Richard mentioned. The yogurt I feed is plain, nonfat, with live cultures. You can buy the same cultures in a bottle without the yogurt, but yogurt is less expensive, and adds a flavor treat to the meals.
My dogs get yogurt every couple of days, and have for the past 6-7 yrs. (on a BARF diet). My dogs don't have any allergies, so that is not a problem.
Yogurt (with live bacteria culture) restores the good flora in the intestine. It will also help in digestion and it balances the juices in the dogs stomach. If your dog throws up yellow bile , it is usually a sign of an inbalance of juices and giving yogurt will most times solve it.
Many dogs in spite of having dairy allergies (which can be from vaccines!) also do not have problems with yogurt. However, some dogs do, so you would want to be careful.
As a substitute for those who have allergies, you can use aciphilophdus (capsules bought at a health food store and they should be stored in a fridge). These will give you the same benifit as yogurt.
I've read that dogs can't really digest milk, but cultured dairy products, such as yogurt, cottage cheese, and cheese, when fed in small amounts, can be digested. Yogurt and cottage cheese are a part of many natural diets. I wouldn't give my doggies milk, though.
Raw milk contains the active enzymes lactase and lipase, which permit raw milk to digest itself. Pasteurized milk, which is devitalized of lactase and other active enzymes, simply cannot be properly digested.Yoghurt, I believe gets live cultures added After pasteurization and this is why it can restore friendly intestinal bacteria. Raw yoghurt would be even better but it's really hard to find.
