I am new to this part of it and was just curious what are some of the essential supplements that most working dogs are given? I have a pup who is almost four months and would like to start giving him some. Thanks!

For me, fish oil (which is given with viamin E) is primary.
Many (probably most) people use this for the fish oil:
http://www.leerburg.com/47.htm
It has an easy pump.
For the E, I like to use mixed tocopherols (for humans) .... but lots of people use other forms.
There is no modern diet, raw or kibble, that has the long-chain Omega 3s that fish oil supplies. JMO. :>

Hey Chris,
What brand of food are you feeding him? Or are you feeding a raw diet? Normally, with dog kibble I won't supplement unless it is joint supplements, but with raw I use salmon oil, ester-c, vitamin E, kelp and alfalfa powder.

Well, I was using Chicken Soup, then I decided to try Innova. Innova didn't sit to well with him. He kept having diarrhea, so I switched him back to Chicken Soup.
Has anybody used K9 Super Fuel and Joint Strong? Is this any good?

I have never heard of those supplements, but for joint therapy I use Glyco Flex (I beleive it's GF 600). They may have changed the name on the bottles since I last bought it though. I also use Chicken Soup for my older gsd and her coat looks a 1000 times better than it used to on other kibble brands.

I'm just going to add my question to this posting.
Starbuck is 16 weeks and a couple days.
The breeder recommended NuVet Supplements, so I picked up a 6 month supply (http://www.nuvet.com/ingredients.asp#vitamina)
I'm currently feeding her Canidae (http://www.canidae.com/). The dog food seems to have a bunch of vitamins and the web site says “Balanced Omega 6 & 3 Fatty Acids”.
I stopped by a local natural foods/holistic pet food store that also does dog training. I’m not going to mention any names, but the lady was a little wacky.
She tells me that NuVet is no good and I should use DinOvite (http://www.dinovite.com/). Does anyone have experience with this supplement?
I asked about fish oil while I was in the store and she pointed out a bottle of Omega 3-6-9. It looks like everyone likes the Salmon oil that Ed Sells (http://www.leerburg.com/47.htm), so I guess I’ll order some of that too.
I don’t want to go overboard, but I want to get her all the supplements she needs while she is still growing.
Thanks
Keith

Did she tell you why Nuvet is no good? I don't use either, but I did have my dog on Canidae before raw. I think Canidae ia an awesome kibble and if I had to go back, that's what I'd feed. Now I'm just supplementing raw w/Salmon oil and Vitamin E.

Calling the nutrition gurus.....umm Connie...and anyone else who knows the answer...
When I supplement the fish oil and E - if I give a double or triple dose every two or three days will it be as effective as a single dose every day? Do I need to be careful about overdosing doing it that way? Can the body store the extra for later?
If I'm feeding grass-fed or wild meat do I still need to give the Vit. E?

It's better to give the fish oil every day.
Also, if you are ever in a situation (ran out of Vtamin E, for instance), then my own feeling is, Don't give the fish oil until you get Vitamin E.
The delicate polyunsaturates need the protection against free radicals. Two results possible from giving fish oil and no E: One is that the E will be used from the supply in the body, possibly triggering an E shortfall; two is that there isn't enough E to protect the Omega 3 EFAs and they do become oxidized (rancid). Rancid polyunsaturates are bad news.
There have been few studies to measure the impact of different doses of vitamin E on lipid oxidation with EPA and DHA (the long-chain Omega 3s in fish oil) in the diet, but evidence from studying the lipids outside the blood indicate protection of the fatty acids by the E from oxidation.
JMO. Long story short: I would give both every day. I would not give fish oil or any oil supplement without Vitamin E.
