Well it finally happened. That dreaded thing that all of you have warned me about. We were walking the dogs tonight. I had Levi and my hubby had Bandit and Jazzmann. Next thing you know we have three boxers rushing us!! My poor lab had a prong on and hubby was trying to control him at the same time that he was trying to defend himself. It was awful!! Levi was going crazy and one of the boxers ended up going face to face with him. Bless his heart the poor little guy. Not only did he hold his own but I think he started it. He wasn't messing around, not from the get go. Makes me wonder what I'm going to be dealing with in the future. Here I am using the end of the leather leash and just beating that boxer with all I had. My poor hubby had to put his fist into the other boxers rib cage. The whole time the owner is very calmly and stupidly walking around saying ..Now, no no, come here, now stop it.. I couldve rung his freaking neck!! One thing I have learned from this site is to always have my dogs on leash. I used to go out front w/my dogs off leash but not anymore. I will always have a leash on them so that I can control them. That guy had no control over his dogs...they didn't listen to him at all. He could have been invisible for all they cared. I hope this hasn't ruined my dog!!

Why didn't you ring his neck? What did you tell him? You need to make sure this doesn't happen again. 3 dogs are a pack and off-leash they are on a hunt. I can't stand irresponsible owners like that. I hope your pup is ok.
Robbin, did you call the police, file a report with them? You need to do that. If you know who the owner is or where he lives, give that info.
It doesn't sound as if Levi started it with the one dog. They were rushing you guys. Levi was defending himself. Was he hurt, truly attacked? What about you and your hubby and your other dogs, what happened exactly? Was it really an attack? Biting involved?
I'm in agreement with those that say to call the police. My heart goes out to you. One thing that my wife and I do when walking our pup (a Maltese) around the parks is for me to carry a big, brass topped walking stick. Maybe need to start carrying it around the house too. *sigh*
That the owner was THAT obtuse... Man, I really wish that when you went to pick up your dog license, they gave you a TEST.
Robbin,
I'm so sorry that this happened to you - it is also my worst nightmare! Since I walk my 8 month old Nickie by myself every morning at 6AM, I always am armed with pepper spray and a 2-foot long metal flashlight. Thank goodness we have never been approached by any dogs off leash except for a chihuahua. I yelled at it to "go home" - its owner was across the street in her yard. Then I yelled at her "keep your dog in your yard, there are pitbulls that run loose in this neighborhood that would have your dog for a snack!" Apparently she listened because I've never seen it loose again.
Hopefully your dogs will recover from the ambush and you will eventually not be fearful when you walk them!
Get yourself a walking stick with a rib spreader on the end of it. This will stop an attack pretty quickly. Alot of discussion has taken place on here about various types of walking sticks/defensive weapons when walking the dogs but when a full blown dog fight breaks out you need something that will do more than piss the dog off where it will continue to direct its anger at your dog. Short of killing the agressive animal you need to put a real hurtin' on it. In my state we can shoot such animals. As much as I would hate to, you do what you have to especially if it means your dog may be screwed up for life after an attack.
