Hugh, don't know if this is the particular virginia creeper you're talking about (some plants are called by different names in different places) but this site shows a pic of it and reports that the berries as well as leaves are toxic: http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/weedguide/singlerecordframe2.asp?id=460
I did a google search - toxicity virginia creeper - and got several results you might want to check out.

Virginia Creeper is mildly toxic. Threepetal bedstraw is not. The bedstraw is also native to Wyoming. It usually vines along the ground, but I imagine you could train it to grow up around a kennel. That's about the only one I've come up with that's both native to WY and nontoxic. You could call your state conservation dept, maybe.

Thanks,
I didn't find anything that scared me much. The USDA says the fruit are toxic by way of Oxalic acid... same thing as Rhubarb and too much spinach. it also says they taste so bad that toxic quantities are unlikely to be eaten.

Yes, it sure does, BUT, you can't search the list for vines specifically, and for native US vines that will grow and not be killed by Wyoming weather at all. Thanks for the link, though
