I have a 13 week old pup and we started leash training, and I did what I read. If the pup is pulling on the leash and let him pull and eventually he will stop. However now, when he runs (withing hte last 2 days) everytime he hits the end of the leash he sounds like a cat coughing up a hairball or like someone with a bad atsma wheeze. I mean like ever 30 secs. No problem when he isn't pulling, but could this be a sign of windpipe damage? Cause when he pulls on the leash he doesn't stop, even when I snap it sometimes.
It's called a "collasping trachea." It is both genetic and caused by injury. There is no medical or surgical treatment available at this time.
Teach your puppy that when he is near you, it is fun. Get TONS of treats. If you feed kibble, use kibbles for treats. Whenever your pup is near you, give a treat. Your pup isn't stupid, he'll stay where the treats are.
If you have a tough independent puppy, there is more you can do w/ correction. But, because your pup is so young and a mistake can do so much damage, please try this way (treats only) for a week or so before you try anything else.
