One of my dogs favorite games is for me to throw his ball in my pool and for him to retrieve it. He also loves swimming in general. My question is that when he retrieves the ball and swims back with it, it seems that he is swallowing a lot of water. (not on purpose.) Now I read that it is bad for a dog to drink water and then exercise because of BLOAT. Is there any way that I can get around this? What do you guys do?

My dogs have all been pool swimmers. I have not noticed any negatives with regards to the chemicals. I DO rinse my dog (and myself) after swimming in pools. Also, I don't use the pool if it has been recently shocked.
I do the same as Susan when it comes to me and the dogs swimming. One thing about them drinking the pool water if they drink too much it comes back up, so I have not had many worries about it .My 3 shepherds swim with us all summer every summer and I have never had a problem with them drinking water from the pool during play(retrieve) one thing I worry more about is the water that gets in ther ears. That is a pain at times.
Bloat does not happen when your dog drinks pool water.
I say keep having fun at the pool!

Oh the ear thing....I hate that & worry about it too. Usually they seem ok after a couple of really big shakes, but every once in a while (if the dog seems to be shaking too much or slightly tilting the head) I use the cotton that comes in one big piece. I tear off a big hunk & twist it VERY gently into the ear to absorb some water.
You know I have not being able to find that kind of cotton and I know exactly what type you are talking about, where do you get yours, like what type of store?
Thanks Sandy, I'll have to find out where that store is.In california I used to find it at a equine store but here ,I have looked at an equine store near and they did not have any, only cotton balls, how many of those you must use for one horse...But I'll ask a friend that is a pediatric Nurse and see if she can guide me to the type of store you mentioned....
Thanks again!
