Are there different variations of prong collars? Besides the quick release? This is a nice looking prong collar here. I've never seen one like this before. I'd love to get one for my dog. The one she has now, looks too bulky because of her short coat.
Carol, I agree with you, but besides placement, I really like this collar. It looks sleek and smooth and finely made. The prongs look like they are still effective. I found this picture on a German Boxer site, unfortunately German is not one of the languages I speak!

I like the look of the collar also, however, effectiveness would over ride my decision on it.
Not sure how it would be on a longer coated dog? I am thinking that the thickness of coat would somehow inhibit micro prongs to get an effective correction on a GSD with a thick coat.
I may be wrong, but I have never used a micro and am not familiar with them. Maybe they are not much different than a regular prong?
Can someone elaborate on that? Please.

I use the micro prongs on my 95+ lbs. dogs – one of whom has a very thick ruff. They respond much better to the closer-placed prongs than the bigger ones that are spaced farther apart. I started with the large prong collar, but found I was basically ‘pulling’ instead of ‘popping’. The smaller prongs let me give a good pop, plus the collars also stay up high on the neck easier.
Word of warning here-Everyone needs to be aware that these micro prongs are not made for large dogs .
If you are transitioning from a regular prong to a micro for more precise movements in obedience with a fully trained dog, AND you have a back up slip collar attached then it may be ok.
The chain on these collars is not made to hold a large dog when giving a correction.
I would hate to see anyone with a large untrained dogs that pulls using one of these for walks, because the liklihood that it would come apart is high.
If you do use one of these collars, make sure to have a slip collar attached to the snap on your leash also!
If you do your training correctly and have the right size collar on your larger dog, you shouldn't need a micro. For years I have used a small regular prong on my Dobermans and Malinois and it works just fine.

I'm thinking that perhaps I don't know the difference between a small regular prong and a micro prong and am just assuming it is a micro prong. I will check L/B's collars for reference.
I do use a dominant dog collar together with the prong collar and haven't had any problems so far. My dogs are relatively well trained, but are not above a good pop once in a while.
