I feed my dogs wings, but not as the base of the meal, only to add variety. As Connie S has explained to me so many times, meaty Chicken Backs represent the perfect Bone->Meat ratio of a whole chicken so are a perfect base for the meal. I get backs and necks at $0.39/lb so I feed 75% backs/necks and 20-25% ground turkey and organs (5% organs on the days I feed them) and then throw in some wings for variety here and there. My dutchie was eating wings at 10 weeks old when she weighed 6.5lbs

thanx...just needed some reassurnace that it was safe...i wont be feeding it as the base of there meal..they have beef and bones as there base meals in the mornings..then in the afternoon they have dry pellets just to keep them chewing as they dont enjoy chewing on there kongs or rubber bones or anything..they dont even like chewing on dry leg bones...but they will eat their pellets...
so that helps them build up their jaw muscles in the afternoon...and then in the evening i usualy give them a different kinda treat as much as i can...meatloaf or some minced chicken and beef mixed with some rice and peas...
What about giving the dogs blood in there meals? i kno a guy that when he mixes his dog food throws in some cows blood to make the food moist...he says its to help preserve their animal instincts..i think its a load of bull...but i would like to kno the implications of adding cow or sheep blood to ur dogs food.

Yusrie, if you can get chicken wings for 'basically nothing', I say go for it. Yes, backs are nearly perfect in proportionate ratios whereas wings are basically rmbs only, but I think if you also add in a fair amount of muscle meat together when feeding the wings, you will be fine.
The only reason I don't feed wings now is because of the price - that darned old Super Bowl really put the prices sky-high when it introduced this now-favorite party food!

The whole animal instinct thing is a crock IMHO, however adding the blood that is in the package with the meat to something like veggies (if you feed those) may help your dog to eat it if they are picky.
I store my meat in freezer bags, so when it thaws there is blood in the bottom of the bag, I add this to meals or into the veggie glop that I make.
I had a guy the other night tell me that he tried to feed his dogs raw and it turned them vicious.....HA HA....after probing him a bit I found out that he fed them together on the deck,UN-supervised, all I said was "no wonder they got into fights then".

Carol – how can you say that? You mean I have been keeping my dogs away from farms for nothing? I was sure that if my dogs saw cows grazing in the field, they would certainly associate them with the beef hearts they have been eating, and simply charge them and tear them apart! Are you telling me they aren’t really that smart at all?

Hopefully they are smart enough to stay away from the cow....
That is a shootin offense around here.
Hopefully my dogs never associate the buffalo meat I feed, we have those here on ranches too and they are WAY quicker and more agile than a cow or bull....
I have only seen one dog get away from one, the rest, the buffalo took care of. (these are stray dogs)

I have been feeding raw for years. My dogs haven't killed any critters yet! The blood thing is just an old wives tale that people keep repeating because their uncle's ex-wife's brother-in-law said so, so you know it is true!
Wings are great and if you can get them free go for it. If these aren't commercially raised chickens they will probably have less meat on them then they would if they were specifically bred to be meat birds.

Yep, it's a myth alright...
I use my shepherds to guard my rabbits from roaming predators (cats & birds of prey mostly). The dogs never hurt the bunnies and are very gentle with them.
Oh, I regularly kill these same rabbits for the dogs to eat and they love it! Don't worry about it - they'll know not to hurt livestock (or pets) if you teach them. Raw feeding won't interfere with that in any way.
(I also like to use the blood from the meats to "flavour" the veggies for the dogs - they're more eager to eat the mix if it's soaked in blood )
