Today ,I realized that with out my knowing, my dog has been alerting me to different people in his territory, different barks for different situations. She was barking in a different tone ,so i went to see, a stranger was moving away from her across the street, when she saw me she stopped barking and stayed in alert , i watched as he went behind a empty house across the street and broke in. I told her to watch, as i went to call the police. they arrived and arrested the young man in the house. now that is what i call my hero. hope everyone learns to listen to there dogs, they might be telling you something good.
Very good dog! It's amazing how many different barks they have. I can tell when I need to get up and check it out just by their sound. I can tell when one of my dogs have a snake, its a very distinct sound for snakes. Different sounds for other critters...too cool. Yes, listen to your dog, watch your dog...they do communicate with you.
Our dogs run the yard at night and my wife always wants me to put them away. We're used to living in a subdivision so barking dogs throughout the night is a problem. Now we live in the sticks and EVERYONE'S dogs are barking but...it's distant. I love the fact that I can let my dogs run at night because that's when the "Harsh Hours" occur. The times when crime will most likely happen. They are the best alarm system because they also carry a varying degree of deterence. Only problem is I try to get up and see every time they sound off and that can cut your sleep time down significantly. Just remember, to be vigilant, you have to get it right every time. The bad guy only needs to get it right once. To the OP, sounds like your dog definately earned it's keep! Awsome story.
