I need to start teaching this to my dog. I can't decide which one to teach. What do you guys think and why? Finish or swing? We are going to be doing rally/agility and maybe obd in the years to come. Does it matter which I choose?
I gather from the terminology that you are refering to the heel position. I have found that if you teach the heel position first(dog at your left side focusing on your face)then choose one or the other they will often do both.
After they are solid on the heel/fuss position I then introduce the finish because it is easier for me to shape/lure. After that, my dogs will soon choose either the swing or finish depending on their location relevant to me. For example, if she is some where to the front or left of me she will swing, but if she is to the right or to the rear she will finish.
In my opinion, the level of drive has something to do with it to. When they are really high in drive the seem to swing more. If we are not actually in the process of working and I give the Fuss command they will often finish and at a slower pace.
Yes it does, thanks for posting. Well we have been working on heel and where my question pertains to is: If I call my dog to me and she sits in front...what is better to teach? When I say heel, to flip to my left or to go around and finish on my left? I can see what you mean by them choosing depending on their position and drive, but what if they are right in front? Since this will be a new position, I want to make it as easy as possible. Thanks.
Alex - for Rally, you need to have both left and right finishes.
If you teach both, then you can alternate to keep your dog guessing so it continues to sit straight in front and doesn't anticipate the finish.
Teach the go-around finish before the flip finish! Just trust me...
So where I get lost - what commands to use! I've messed up on 2 out of 2.
Don't use "flip" if you use the command "sit"
Don't use "watch" if you use the command "platz"
For my puppy (#3) I am using "here" for front, "fuss" for come to heel (go-around finish) and continue to heel. I think I will have to use "move" for flip finish as "swing" and "scoot" are already used for something else.
Thanks for the tips Anne. I'm glad you let me know. I was planning on using "flip", but since my dog knows "sit" we'll change it to "swing". We don't use "platz", so we can use "watch". Good points though. I'll remember that for sure.
