Is there anything that can be done about shedding? My 14 month old GSD sheds CONTINUOUSLY! It seems everytime I have vacuumed everything, he is already getting hair everywhere again. I have been grooming him atleast every other day, however he is still on a commercial dog food diet but is supplemented with olewo carrots.
Is there anything that can be done? Or is this just what he is going to do? I mean is there anyway to even minimize the shedding at all?
Don't have a lot of experience but my GSD had hair everywhere. We have been on raw now for close to two months and either due to diet age, now 27 months or just my imagination but shedding seems to have gotten better. Also use the furminater regularly.
I also think a raw diet may be a big factor. My first 2 GSD's I referred to as "German Shedder Dogs". They were on commercial food. My current guy is 17 months and on a raw diet. The hair output is dramatically less. Granted, this isn't exactly a controlled study, just my experience with 3 dogs. But the difference is so huge it certainly suggests a connection. Perhaps other people can chime in with their experiences.
If your guy isn't on raw, you might want to consider it (for many reasons other than coat), or at least get him the best kibble you can afford ( http://www.leerburg.com/all-natural%20kibble.htm )and supplement with salmon oil. Even my conventional but extremely open-minded vet says he pushes salmon oil for both its coat- and skin-improving and anti-inflammatory properties.
1. Good Diet - raw does result in way, way less shedding IMHO. If you are not ready to go completely raw, consider adding fresh ingredients (not olewo carrots) to his diet.
2. Brushing daily with a good combo of brushes, which I choose based on hair texture - my basics are a slicker brush, a grooming rake, a shedding blade, and a furminator. I would also love a Mars coat king.
3. A good vacuum.
I met a lady at a schutzhund trial one time and she told me she feeds Blackwells, you can only get it at dog shows and in bulk, but I must say her dogs looked awsome and she claimed they stopped sheeding and needing baths very often. I felt their coats and they were really impressive, even after petting them for atleast 3-4 minutes I didnt have any hair on my hands, nor did I see any fall out. But I personally have not been able to find this food, but when I do Im gonna buy pallets of it. Maybe this will help.
I can sit and watch my dogs shed. With the window behind them I can actually see the hair popping off of them. A good vacuum and brushing often make it managable, but it will not go away. My wife is constantly picking up "boneless puppys" out of the corners of the house.
I have two different GSD, both have a little different coat. I feed raw. They both shed..... One thing gauranteed about GSD, they shed 24\7...."hard wood floors and a dyson" best answer
