Our new border collie cross shepherd will obey me not the wife. How can we get the puppy to obey her and our young kids?

Will if you post political links on my web board again it will be the last time you post to my board. This is a dog training web board - not a public forum for your political views.
I only give one warning on this.
I edited out your links

Between your 2 threads, it sounds like you need to start with Ed's Groundwork training article on the main Leerburg site. Check back in a couple weeks and let us know how your pup responds to groundwork training.

What the heck are all those links in your post??? That was annoying. I'm on this board to learn about dogs. I don't have time to hit a link just to be brought to some political stand you have! Jeez, people are so friggin' bizarre!

Agree!!! I would quietly ask you to remove them before someone else higher up "suggests" you do.

Hi Will,
Welcome to the forum.
Now, How old is the pup and who is the main caretaker?
When did you get the pup? and what have you already done with the pup?
Do you use a crate?
What is the pup doing when your wife tries to get it to do something?
In order to give you good quality advice that will help you and your dog, these are just some of the questions that need to be asked.
Thanks

Our pup is 11 weeks old. I am the main caretaker as i work from home. We got her at 6 weeks old and we have been crate training her for housebreaking. She obeys me in the basic commands - sit, come, down. SHe also is getting good at wait and leave it. Out is a challenge but is coming. She does some tricks like shake left/right paw and high five. When my wife is trying to get her to do things, she jumps up on her, ignores her, nips at her, etc... She obeys her some of the time and is getting better but not even close to 30% of the time. We have been working on dominace with the muzzle shake and the scruff shake when needed.

Mr. Brown,
Wow! Just wow!
You have had the puppy 5 weeks - it is 11 weeks old - and "She obeys me in the basic commands - sit, come, down. SHe also is getting good at wait and leave it. Out is a challenge but is coming. She does some tricks like shake left/right paw and high five."
Wow!
I have nothing to add. I know, I know, a first for me.

Will, I think what Mike was trying to say is that your puppy is 11 weeks old – 11 weeks!! You should be doing nothing with this little guy except building a bond – all of you. It doesn’t matter that you will be the main caretaker – the pup needs to be around all of you at one time or another.
If you insist on getting an obedience title on this dog at 6 months, then I would suggest you do short, meaning SHORT, training sessions (1-2 minutes) now, but with everything being fun, fun, fun, and always ending up with a win situation for your pup. Always use food rewards or toys, but never use discipline at this age. He is basically a baby, and we don't normally smack around little babies.
If you can't wait six months for the title, then I guess your wife will just have to take her lumps.
Mike - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
As you think, so shall you be. |
