Hi
just wanna air out my side on breeders of the gsd, dont get me wrong for i have workinglines myself, but dont we guys think sometimes that the czech, ddr lines or what have you in the recent years is only a marketing hype?for saying border dogs definitely add a a mystique to anyone and ,talkin about puppy mills a certain kennel in czech produces at least a thousand pups a year!!!whew!!it outsells the whole of europe and as most breeers i spoke to note that only a fraction of the litter will be good enough for a certain criteria, yet look how huge they produce yearly!!i just wonder how many of those are real dogs,,as in REAL like what we all wanted in a working dog...but dont you guys ntice the preference in color like dark sable, maybe to differentiate them but to breed for color, which most of there dogs are, isnt it like deviating to something like for show??any opinions on this one??

What Kennel are you refering to and what proof do you have that they produce that many dogs?
So you are saying that they are pumping out 80 Puppies a month????
-Do tell.

I think you have to go see for yourself, if they are "real dogs".
So many websites say A LOT about their dogs and then when you go see these dogs, for one they are not as big as they appeared on the photos and their conformation is a bit off and their performance is half of what you were told. Also their kennels alone will let you know how much time they spend getting to know the dogs they so call "family raised" etc... Seen a few in California that I thought their website sure showed a different side of what is really going on....
I think seeing it for yourself will answer all the questions you might have about a breeder.
Seeing the kennel/breeder/dogs on a website is OK, word of mouth is good, but going to see in PERSON is BEST.

Steve, you're probably right....
I guess when anyone thinks their might be a puppy Mill of some kind in any countries, they should invest in person before saying it is.And I am not saying that that is what the OP is trying to do but if any one needs facts they should investigate in person unless someone else has been there to see.
As far as any breeder producing that many pups and are breeding for only color, their should be some facts before pointing fingers. What I want to know ,like Art is asking is it a fact and who is this breeder?

The poster's first language isn't English so I hope you guys aren't too hard him.
I believe he is asking about the Czech/DDR dog hype prevalent today.
In my humble opinion, Didier, you have to look at the individual lines and the individual dogs themselves and not their country of origin. It is true though that a lot of breeders, including back home and here in North America, simply use the 'border dog' thing to justify their breeding practices and don't use proper selection for their breeding dogs...which yes, is just as devastating to the breed as show dogs.

No, I didnt mean anything like that. I kinda think I was focused on one part of the post and not the entire context. Can you explain a little more about Border Dogs, I've never seen that term before. not to stray off the subject but Velasco is my birth name, I wonder if were related.

I think Didier raises a valid point. There are people who will use phrases or words to "catch" the newbies. These people don't know anything about breeding, but they know what sells. unfortunately unscrupulous breeders are found the world over, and a little bit of knowlege can be a dangerous thing.
My impression was that Didier wasn't talking about any one breeder in particular.

Unfortunely you have breeders that will use catchy phrases and word for people who believe everything they read on websites and news papers for that matter. We had a person that was advertising GSD pups and said that they were police k9 material yet the person advertising that has never worked his dogs or done anything for that matter with the pair he bred, but I am sure some people that bought from him are telling people that ask about there new pup say" oh his parent are police dogs" We hear that all the time...
You can tell people oh yes my dogs came from border patrol dogs and people will believe, and repeat to others exactly that..
That is why I always research pedigrees..
