I am beside myself with grief and worry.
Today while playing fetch my female ISIS, jumped up on my son for the ball and landed on her back left leg breaking the tibia bad enough to need surgery, the vet kept her overnight to monitor her, im so heartbroken.
Im asking for your help: I could really use some advice and encouragement in the best way to deal with this tragedy.
Im still in shock, Im so worried about her, she was so good she did not go into shock and seemed to be consoling me, by putting her muzzel on me while I held her up in the exam room.
A specialist is going to go over my options tommorow, pins inside, pins outside or a plate.
The bone is broke in the middle so the growth plates are not affected.
Im not to proud to admit that im so upset im shedding tears I love my prescious little girl.
If you have any info or advice I could really use it.
Thanks.

Oh MY! Jason, my heart goes out to you and ISIS. Pay attention to what the specialist says; it's likely there will be quite a bit of physical therapy needed.
One thing you want to make extra sure of: Tell your son it is NOT HIS FAULT! From the situation you described, he may be feeling strong guilt over this tragedy.
All my wishes for a speedy recovery for all!

I am really sorry to hear that Jason. Isis is a beautiful, strong dog though and I am sure you and her will get through it together.
Do not feel bad about shedding a tear for her, men are allowed to do that too and it goes to show even more how much you care for your dog.
Please know you will be in our thoughts and keep us posted on progress and updates.

Jason, I'm so sorry for you guys! What a horrible thing; I'd be a basket case, too.
Jim has a great point. I don't know how old your son is, but if he's young, he could very well be feeling guilt. Heck, even if he's older he might be feeling guilt, even if he knows intellectually it's not his fault.
As badly as you feel about this, just remember that while it'll be a rough go for awhile, eventually this will all just be a bad memory and your pup will be scampering around with you again.
I can't offer you advice about options, but my heart goes out to you. I do have a vet staying at our house for the weekend. If he ever wakes up (he's on 12 hour rotations, 6 days a week at the ER) I'll ask him about it.
Meanwhile, hang in there. Your pup is alive and will be for many years to come. You just have to get through this bad patch. Please keep us posted...she's such a beautiful girl, and I know you love her.

My vet friend said that without knowing more about what kind of fracture it is or other extenuating that your dog should have an excellent prognosis...the fact that she's a puppy works in her favor and they generally heal faster than adults. Also he said that dogs aren't like horses...generally they have a full recovery and shouldn't affect her future working ability.
Hope this makes you feel better.

Jason, I'm heartbroken for ISIS and for you and have shed tears for you too. This is the first post I read this AM and couldn't believe it. When you posted that recent picture of her, I fell in love with her. She struck a chord in me. Your love and pride in her was reflected in her face. I wish you and the vet wisdom in choosing the right option. Dogs are resilient and I'm sure this will become just a memory. I will be praying.

Damn, I dont even know what to say, freak accident is right.
I am so sorry you are having to experience this--all your gusto, enthusiasm and zest in your previous posts about training...suddenly all placed on pause, catapulted into, like you said, a state of grief and worry.
Like was said before, she is in good hands, and she is a pup. She'll pull through, as will you. Hang in there and you and she are in my thoughts too.

My Greyhound broke his hind leg when he was three months old because he lost control on a slippery floor and slammed into the cabinets. I felt HORRIBLE about it. I was FREAKING OUT. Crying, for sure. Freak accidents can happen. The good news is that the leg healed in less than five weeks, and we've never seen any sign or consequence from that break; he's nine years now, and has always been a very active dog. Puppies heal quickly, and as long as the break doesn't affect the growth plate, all should be better than fine. It sounds like you're in good hands, and have every reason to believe that all will be okay. Take a deep breath and hang in there, dogs are pretty resilient.
