I began running with Ellie when she reached 18 months. It is a continuous run with her tethered to my side for about 30 minutes. We have worked up to 9-12 miles per week.
I enjoy running with her tremendously. She seems to also enjoy the early morning runs with all the sights and sounds of birds, rabbits, frogs, etc. Aside from the benefit of physical activity for both of us, I think it is another way to build and strengthen a nice bond with your dog.
She is now 21 months and has started her first heat cycle since we began running together. Can I continue running with her at this distance/duration throughout her heat cycle?
Katie (great name, as it's my wife's as well!), while it should not do any harm to Eliana physically, it might not be a good idea. Dogs in mating mode are FAR more persistant/dangerous than normal. If some stud gets wind of her, it would be a bigger battle than it's worth to defend her.
You may take a look at those diaper things that are sometimes used. Kinda like a canine chastity belt!
