I started a new thread because we should WAKE UP!!!!!!! Step away from the computer and the riveting discussion of which hypothetical puppy you would select for a hypothetical contest in a faraway place.
I posted earlier that the bill will be changed!!! It has been!!!!
http://www.cahealthypets.com/pdf/AB%201634%20_as%20amended%204-30-07_%20redlined%20May%202%202007%20version%20B%20_2_.pdf
The California bill that will be discussed tomorrow HAS BEEN CHANGED BADLY!!! It does not benefit those of us who care about the breed and conformity of working dogs. (unless we actually work them as blind dogs or police K9s) Just being registered AKC is not enough, showing they are trained is not enough!!! Under the bill, if you do not show or compete your dog every two years you MUST alter it!!!! This bill will protect "licensed" breeders, puppy mills and show ring people, it will not protect people who raise quality dogs who train them to do what they were born to do just for the sake of the dog!
What can you do? Call or write your representatives and tell them under no circumstances are they to consider doing what California is about to do, and that they should call anybody they know in the California legislature and get on record against it. What will that do? Well smoke in a restaurant lately? Have to get your car's emissions tested? I don't care if you are socialist or libertarian, the country tends to listen to California when it comes to "progressive" legislation.
I am new here and might get kicked off for rocking the boat, but if an anti-gun issue this important came up, I doubt if the gun fanciers on their web board would waste 41 replies or 1500+ views on a post asking what finish people prefer their revolvers in.....
Just my two cents, you all do want you want...
Jason
P.S.I'd go with B and stainless steel...peace!

I am not sure why you think you are rocking the boat! Just about everyone on this board agrees this is a bad bill. We have discussed it at length! It's AB1634

Yes AB 1634. It was obviously a typo error on my part. I guess the problem I am having is the general apathy. This bill is being argued tomorrow and nobody is up in arms this week. The bill is considerably different than it was in committee and is very harmful to our positions. This is much worse than no protection for non-purebred dogs. This is an attack on trained purebreds that are not shown or competed. Bigger deal…
I didn’t say I discovered the bill, I just find it amusing how it popped up and disappeared a month ago and on the eve of its possible passing there is no discussion on options or courses of action!

Most of us who are opposed to the bill in California have sent letters to the appropriate parties & done everything we can to get the word out. This bill has been discussed at length on this board & every other board. I think everyone is doing everything they can. I understand your frustration, it's a really crappy piece of legislation, but if you think people have been apathetic about it, you are dead wrong! Both USCA & WDA are strong proponents to the bill. Here is a link to a real good website: http://saveourdogs.net/ab1634.html

Easy Jason, There is tons of organized opposition to this garbage. Every working dog club, show ringers,breed clubs, and the NRA. A lobbying group has been formed, lawyers are involved, the AKC has been contacting reps and the governor. You probably just don't see any coverage of it. But if you put 5 anarchist peta types on a corner all you hear is about a huge rally to protect animals.

I know. I will put this to bed.Maybe it was just primal scream therapy. As a lawyer I just hate to see Americans give up their freedoms to the government so easily. Even if you own no animals you should be against this. Parens Patriae is being taken too far they treat us like children. The government is going overboard with telling us what is good for us and we are going along with it.
You know what they say. When puppies are outlawed only outlaws will have puppies...
I'm going to go walk my unaltered girl...
peace,
Jason

I have the same primal scream and agree completely with what you said. I'm involved in another issue for over a year and I can tell you it seems I've written and faxed until I'm blue in face and it makes me sick. Our "representatives" are NOT representing US, they are representing themselves, their own desires, and their own agendas. California is about as socialistic as it gets in this country and the people there are getting in deeper and deeper - and most don't even know it.
.... Both USCA & WDA are strong proponents to the bill.... Susan, I don't understand why these 2 organizations would be supporting this bill? What the heck, are they nuts??

Yes, you are. Stop that! :wink:
Seriously, does anyone know how this bill, if passed into law, will be enforced? It's easy to hide a dog from the "authorities" (what a word when connected with a ridiculous law). Only way I can figure enforcement is if they make it mandatory for breeders and vets to tattle on who bought dogs and who brought in dogs for treatment.
Actually I would pay the damn fine every year until "I" decide when to neuter my dog, if ever. Nobody decides this for me, especially not some dumb politician. Good grief.

Sandy, Therein lays the problem. Enforcement. The provision of the Statute is vague. It states “A local animal control agency shall be responsible for, conducting outreach efforts in connection with, and administering, this chapter.”
This could mean:
1. More Animal Control patrols;
2. Crime watch Campaigns (rat out your neighbor);
3. Mandatory Vaccinations to ensure annual monitoring (i.e. car emissions tied to tag renewal);
4. Random subjective (discriminatory, persecutory) enforcement;
5. Campaign to vets to turn in Clients.
As for Vets turning you in, should not be a problem, they take oaths to helps animals and they should find that their oaths superceed the law. You should talk to your vet about it now. In the jurisdictions that have anti pit-bull laws, i.e; Miami, there has been no problem for APBT owners to find vets.
Kim Forde-Mazrui,( Professor of Law and Justice Thurgood Marshall Research Professor, University of Virginia).
In a recent paper spoke of the problems of uncertain enforcement.:
“To the extent specific rules are defined to cover conduct that reasonable people would assume is legal, or is so underenforced as to provide the same impression, then the public will not have the capacity to predict the occasions of enforcement. Moreover, even to the extent potential targets understand the content of specific rules, the overwhelming underenforcement of such rules leaves unclear when they will be enforced. When social norms and enforcement patterns are unpredictable, then the criminal law is, in effect, uncertain even though its written content is clear.”
Uncertain laws are the seeds of tyranny.Think locally because California is infectious and when your state catches what She is spreading there is no cure!!!
Peace
Jason
