Well after reading some articles on various websites and reading posts on here about the BARF diet I decided to switch my dogs to it. None of the websites i visited had any sort of guideline how to figure out the amount to feed each day.
My male is 90lbs. and the female 77lbs. How do I figure out how much meat they will need to eat each day?
Danielle,
I think you will be happy with the results of the diet switch for your dogs. I have been feeding raw for over 6 years now. I would recommend the K9 Nutrition list on Yahoo for really excellent information.
But to answer your question, rule of thumb is 2-3% of the dogs body weight fed daily......unless over or under weight then adjust accordingly.
This amount would not be JUST meat however......raw meaty bones (chicken wings or backs, etc) eggs, liver, gizzards, fish, etc...
I don't weigh or measure the food for my 4 dogs, just kind of 'eyeball' the amount and then go by how they look but many people are more comfortable with weighing the daily portion of food. Ed sells a great scale http://leerburg.com/728.htm
I like to see a hint of ribs........lean and mean. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
