I can only answer one of your questions. From my own experience I have had a female go into her first heat cycle as young as 6 months. I've never heard of it happening younger than that, but this is only from my own experience.
I never heard of a no-mate spray, I think it would just be easier to keep the dogs seperated for that time.
My female went into her 1st heat at about 6 to 7 months, then her 2nd heat was at exactly 11 months, by then I had a male, her little brother who was about 3 months old and he had no idea what was going on. No mounting, sniffing etc... and seemed to ignore it.
As a matter of fact the female stated hugging (I call it hugging because she would pin him to the floor with her arms and weight then hump him) I thought she may be trying to show dominance to him not sex him.
Of course I'm sure by the time my female goes into her 3rd heat, my boy will be well aware of what is happening and they will be of course be kept separately.
Is there a spray on the market they claim masks the sex scent?
I have 2 pups just abt to hit the 5 month mark...they are never left alone and they are brother and sister.
but i noticed the other morning when i let them out to eat and take them for their walk/run that the male at 1 point made movements onto the female like those of an adult dog wanting to hump.
the problem i am faced with is i always run them and walk them 2gether twice a day.
when she is in heat will i have to lock her away for the duration so that there are no mistakes of him trying a quick one.
and also..how long does the heat period last?
i have a bitch and a dog and my bitch is 2 1/2 and she just had her 4th season last month, she had her first season at 6mths of age, i also have a dog he is just 6 mths old and he had not shown any signs of mounting our bitch at all until she was near the middle of her season then all of a sudden we had to keep an eye on him all the time , he is to young to reproduce yet but he was trying to have a good go, a bitches season normally last for 21 days ,and unfortunatelly as they get older you will have to seperate them when your bitch is in season , that is all the time and he will get very depressed as he will smell her unless you get one of them or both done
thanx michell
that helps a lot. i have already made provisions for keeping them apart.
i just cant always take 1 out at a time for the run so i guess il just have to.
i dont want to have any of them fixed until after they have fully matured then i will have her mated with another long haired german shepherd or belgian shepherd. and maybe keep 1 pup.
and i want to mate him with a solid larger breed GSD bitch because he is big and strong and proud would love to see the outcomes. also want to keep 1 pup.
then il have her fixed...
thanx.
hi...well...just an update..my bitch had her first heat and it was hell...every night the crying and moaning and outbursts of energy and attempts to get with each other!
anyways...we got thru it with no incidences...the male is no longer trying to hump her!
now another question...how often does this happen? when should i expect the next heat? does it happen every month? every 6 months?
Please help.

My Mal runs a cycle approx every 6 months. Some bitches will have them every 6 months or they may only have a cycle yearly.
From what I have researched, it depends on the bitch.
I am sure more experienced people will respond to this as well.
As for the nightmare of having both males and females.....well....I go through it every 6 months. We did build an outdoor kennel run that we call Ft. Knox, no one can get out and no one can get in.
She is out there all day (or I take her to work) and then she comes in at night. And I come home every couple of hours to check on them all and make sure no strays are hanging around.
The males stay in the kennels that are out of sight of her. They do not try and escape, but they lay or sit right at the door of their kennels and whine.
It is what it is and unless you want to alter them, which I would not recommend until they are two years old or better, it is something that just needs to be dealt with.
I feel for you, I really do.

I have a question. My female gsd just turned 1 year old and I do not think she has had her first cycle. Is there a chance I would not know if she had it? Is it possible to have the first cycle after a year?

One dog I know of apparently had her first heat with no bleeding and no visible signs of being in heat. The only clue the owner/breeder had was her males were going nuts. She had a test done which confirmed the dog was in heat. I don't know how common this is and her next heat was normal.
