Lepto can be transmited from other animals besides rodents. There is a specific illness that comes mostly from rabbits, though, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is. Arg! It's on the tip of my tongue (I hate it when that happens). The one I'm thinking of infected a bunch of people in my area while they were mowing their lawns and dispersed the illness because it sent particles in the rabbit's droppings airborne.
Use a remote collar in your training and it will stop this dog from killing these small animals. Only let the dog out when you are there and ALWAYS have a collar on. HIGH LEVEL continuous will teach this dog that small animals have land mines surrounding them.
Bottom line is if you cant control the dog under the distraction of a small animal then the dog is not trained.

Control and a trained dog I have. This was not my question
Non the less thank you for your input! I agree, better to prevent the harm than to treat it after it has happened.

I am worried about what my dog could catch by killing small animals in the wild, or even in town.

Control - if you are on a walk and see a rodent, the dog will obey when the handler says Leave it, Heel, Stay, or whatever.
So since you have control and a trained dog, per your post, you might indeed want to stop allowing the dog to catch rodents or any animals.
Viral hemorrhagic disease is one of several rabbit-borne diseases.
Rodents in general carry Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), Lassa fever, Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis, Trichinosis, and several dangerous tick-borne or flea-borne diseases.

Ted, are you saying that you have complete control over your dog and give him the "OK" to kill things?? Or is he off lead doing his own thing and, while you *could* call him off, you just don't choose to stop him? I suppose some dog's jobs are actually just that - to kill rodents and the like around a property - but it doesn't sound like that's your situation...?
