Hello and Happy and Blessed Memorial Day to you and yours...
My dad was a vet, served in Viet Nam. About 5 years before he died, he was honored into a veterans memorial they do each year here. There is a veterans trail with big stones and (his) names engraved on down the trail out at the reservior. He died about 3 years ago, but of course we still go to the memorial service, honoring him and all veterans.
There is a 21 gun salute at the service. Should I or should I not take Cato pup to this memorial? As I wrote this question, I think I answered it. I'm thinking it would be a great opportunity, but at the same time, think having a more controlled (single) gun shot would be more appropriate for starters. What about having him in the car in the distance?
Appreciate any thoughts about this...and again, thank you for your service to any vets reading today.

If your dog has never been exposed to gunfire, I think it would be best to leave him at home. A good way to introduce gunfire to a dog, is from a distance, while the dog is occupied doing some other task, even if it's playing. While at a ceremony, it wouldn't be proper to do things to distract your dog during this tribute.

Thanks David for your input. The pup is fearless, I cannot *imagine* the guns being an issue for him. However, with the 4th of July right around the corner, will have a chance at a totally random, unavoidable variable...will get some controlled gunshots going between now and then, like you said, at a distance with distractions.
I think I'll just go enjoy the ceremony, with my own personal focus. There's always next year with the 21 guns and at that time, Cato dog will be in a solid platz at my side.

Here's what I would do to pre-desensitize a dog to gunfire:
Get a copy of "Saving Private Ryan" and play the beach landing portion at low volume several times, watching your dogs reaction. If he's fine with it, gradually increase the volume and let it become a background noise to him.
The gunfire from Saving Private Ryan is tech. perfect, it was actually recorded up in the northern Atlanta region by a bunch of us automatic weapon owners, so I know this for a fact.
This would be good advice for anyone that's going to do SchH with their dog - early desensitizing of their dog to gunfire is a good foundation step.

OMG. Hilarious. Cato's already seen Saving Private Ryan. The beach scene specifically. Didn't even phase him. I thought it was perfect too! However, he has not heard it turned up loud, nor has he heard "real" shots, or rather "felt" them. I think we are on the right track here!

Ok Jason. For some reason, I was thinking you hadn't done that, that's why I didn't ask, but now remember it was the tape of sounds you didn't do with the pups. Cool.

I actually have the mp3 of a small portion of the beach landing. It's short but loud. If anyone can tell me how to put it here I'll be happy to do it
