My mom just informed me this morning that she got a new home owner insurance policy. She said that I would have to move out within 3 weeks, because someone will be coming to inspect the house in 3 weeks and they said that German Shepherds are not allowed to live in the house?!
How could this be true? How can they tell someone what dogs they can't have in their own damn house?
What state are you in? I am a mortgage broker, and I own 2 GSD's. I am pretty informed about this. In Illinois, I know Liberty Mutual will not insure a home with a GSD and a child under the age of 15, hence I will not referr or do business with Liberty Mutual or any of their affiliates. In fact, I make sure any of my clients change away from them if they have them. I had a pretty large "run in" with an agent over it. I really let her have it. Allstate on the other hand (who I use) has no issues with GSD's at all.
I knew I had seen this topic before but I don't know how to post the link to it. Subject was "American Family banning rotties" and it was started on 4-18-07 by Alex Corral. Hope that helps for you to look it up - some were saying that State Farm or Farmer's will insure.
I'm also in Florida (Jacksonville). When I bought a new house 2 years ago, State Farm said they didn't care if I had a GSD or not because they don't cover bites / damage caused by pets anyway, so it doesn't matter to them.

Matt,
Not trying to be sneaky here, but why can't you just "be gone" the day that the inspection is?
I understand the need for homeowners, but I do not understand the whole "this breed of dog is uninsurable" thing. They need to start looking at the little ankle biters and start declaring the "little guys" uninsurable.
Our Insurance Agent knows that we have dogs, however, he just laughed and said....."I don't want to know what kind they are."
That being said, we are out on 80 acres in the country, not to mention all the dogs are in kennels that are secure, so the chances of a dog bite are minimal.
Now, my Bloodhound and Malinois are members of the Fire Department and they are covered for "up to" three bite claims each before the insurance company will raise rates OR make me get rid of the dogs.
I laughed at the City Finance Officer when she told me they would try to make me get rid of my dogs. Fat chance, so go ahead and try I think is what I told her.
