Well I almost fell off my couch tonight! The CBS evening news(11pm)here in NYC viewing area ran an ivestigtive report(in their words!) on raw food diets!!
The report was pretty positive, they interviewed a woman who has 4 dogs( Pit bull, and shitz shu looking dog and some more mutts) and 10 or so cats. All of them have been on a raw food diet for a few years and she swore by it!! They showed her PBT eating a chicken wing on her black leather couch
They also had film footage of Billinghurst and mentioned that he jump started the BARF movement in the early 90's. They mentioned that alot of info is avilable on line and said for more info on BARF to log on to their web site, which I think was http://www.cbsnews.com but I'm not 100% sure about that.
Of course they interviewed a vet who was against it, but overall the report was not negative.
I just thought it was cool that a major news program ran the story!!

It would be cool if you could find the story on their website. I searched but no luck.

I did quite a bit of searching, but here is the link to the story. The storyline title is "The Controversy Over the BARF Diet".
Please hold all applause for later.

Thanks for the link, but boy was that a short and uninformative article. lots more useful info both pro and con on this board. would have been nice if they asked the vet in the story what she would recommend to feed and the pros and cons of that choice. oh well, what can we expect from tv news.

I've spoken to many vets. they all seem to think raw meats are a huge problem for the dogs. Too risky. Yet, everytime one of the people I know brings their dogs in to the vet the vets rave about the dogs health and condition. My training group of about a dozen police dogs has two of us that do the BARF thing. My dog is approaching seven and the other is right at about eight. Both look and act like four year olds. Recovery time from strenous/stressful deployments is NOTICEABLY lessoned. I won't recommend to other handlers what or how to feed their dogs but I now include the text Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats, The Ultimate Diet, as part of the reading list for my handlers courses.

i like dr. picarin's book. natural health for dogs and cats.
i am not sure i like the idea of CBS doing a segment on natural diet. but i didn't see it.
most vets disagree with the practice, but most vets also push science diet. need i say more??????
if you do BARF, it's suggested that you run blood counts on your dog to make sure he is really getting adequate nutrition.
i had considered raw diet for one of my dogs, and my vet--a holistic vet who was anti commercial diet--said no. that dog's digestive system was so out of balance, it would have been a bad choice.

he did explain it, but i'm not sure i can.
it's chinese medicine. his energy fields are cold, and there was something specific to his digestive system and the dog needs "warm" food.
that doesn't mean like out of the oven. some foods are warming, some are cooling. we had a choice between duck and fish. (he's allergic to everything else). i was worried duck would be bad for his digestive problems. the vet said duck would be better than fish because duck is a warm food, fish is a cold food.

Thanks Caniche, for posting the direct link! The site was very hard to find!!
I agree that the article on the website was not very impressive, BUT.....the station broadcast was very well done. The most impressive thing to me is that this is the 1st time I have seen a news broadcast on this subject, especially in NYC viewing area, where there is a huge competition for airtime.I think it is a testament to the fact that BARF is becoming more widely used and accepted. This was my reason for posting this topic to begin with!!
I also agree with Kevin wholeheartedly. MY dogs are in great shape and the vets always rave about how wonderful they look. (prior to a barf diet, my female literally would starve herself for days to NOT HAVE TO EAT COMMERCIAL DOG FOOD!!!)
People will do what they want...I just think that BARF is best when at all possible.
